Anyone else notice that his column on the BBC seems to have been pulled? NOTW 'exclusive' got owt to do with it perchance? I was thinking the same.

Avoid, rather than check. Check, rather than hurt. Hurt, rather than maim. Maim, rather than kill. For all life is precious, nor can any be replaced. |

The week before Christmas, I found myself the subject of some newspaper coverage about my life off the field, which made for a difficult few days. But I resolved to learn and move on from the experience, get my head down and focus on my football, especially at such a busy time. There is plenty more I hope to achieve in the next 12 months after a big year for me in 2007. I made my England debut, scored my first international goal, and it has been a rollercoaster ride with Manchester City from one end of the Premier League table to the other. Richards hopes he will have a place in Capello's first England team |
Those were the ups, but there were a few downs too. Failing to qualify for Euro 2008 and being sidelined after my first bad injury at the end of last season, which meant I needed surgery on my calf, gave me something to think about. Things like that help me learn and make me a stronger person. I know now not to take anything for granted because you never know what is around the corner, as a player and a person. When my aunt, who I was very close to, died in October, there was a lot going on in my mind but you have to block it out when you are playing. I am still only 19 but I already know that not everything is going to run smoothly in my career and I have to learn how to react when things are not so rosy. I do realise everyone is going to have an opinion about me but they don't always know what is going on in my life. They create their opinions from what they read in the papers, which unfortunately most of the time is untrue. | I resolved to learn and move on from the experience, get my head down and focus on my football |
It is frustrating to hear people talk about my new contract at City and make out the reason I haven't signed yet is because I am being greedy when they don't know the facts. I have still got two and a half years left on my current deal - it is not as though I am in my last year or six months - and things don't happen overnight. As for the speculation linking me with a move to join Kevin Keegan at Newcastle, I don't know where that has come from, but there is nothing in it. It is easy for people to make out I am something I am not but football, and doing well on the pitch, is the most important thing to me and I am hungry for success. With City, we have had a bit of a tricky time recently and slipped to seventh in the table but we are still up there with a chance of finishing in the top four. If we want to really compete with the top teams though, we have got to start picking up some points, not just drawing games. | 606: DEBATE |
We have got two hard matches coming up, against Manchester United and Arsenal next month. But before that we go to Derby County and, with respect, we have to make sure that when we play teams at the bottom of the table, we take full advantage. With England, it is also about building on what I did last year. I haven't spoken to him yet but I am sure the new manager Fabio Capello will have new ways of doing things. I just hope I am in his plans for the friendly against Switzerland on 6 February so I can show him what I can do again. He sent someone to watch me in the FA Cup replay against West Ham and I think I have been playing well enough to be involved but it is up to him. Like everyone else, I am just waiting for him to name his first squad next week. |
I thought this was very honest and good.

I was a little bit surprised, and disappointed, that David Beckham wasn't included in Fabio Capello's first England squad but I can understand why - he is not match fit. I don't agree with just giving players England caps. I think they should be earned on merit. But, if he was fit, I think David would be in the squad - I don't see it that he has been dropped. He can still win that 100th cap and I am sure, once he is back playing regularly, he will. | You might not know much about Daniel Sturridge but I have seen him play a lot and he is pure class |
It is a bit harsh to say that just because he plays in America he shouldn't get picked but it has definitely counted against him on this occasion - he has not played enough matches. You can see that he has still got the quality though and let's just hope he gets fit because he is still an important player for our team. I heard about my call-up a few hours before the squad was announced on Thursday. I got a text from the Football Association saying I am involved in the 30-man squad, but it has still got to be knocked down to 23 at the weekend. I didn't know that Capello was coming to the Manchester City-Arsenal game on Saturday but it will be nice to show him what I can do - I don't think he has seen me play in person yet. I have missed City's last two games with a knee injury but at the moment everything is looking good for me to be fit. It has been frustrating to watch while I have been out - especially our FA Cup defeat by Sheffield United. The one thing people will remember from that match is when the ball hit a balloon and led to their first goal. I have seen balloons at plenty of matches but I have never known for one to affect a game before - it must have been a million-to-one chance. It is always devastating to go out of the FA Cup - it is a competition I love - and, just like when we were knocked out of the Carling Cup by Tottenham before Christmas, it left us on a bit of a downer for a while. But we have to push on with our aims in the Premier League and one of the positives to come out of that game, and the draw with Derby, is how Daniel Sturridge has taken his chance in the team. He is a good friend of mine and I am absolutely buzzing for him. Dan has been biding his time - he has had a bad injury that has kept him out for six or seven months - but he has come back on the scene and scored two in two games. | 606: DEBATE |
You might not know much about him but I have seen him play a lot and he is pure class. I don't want to big him up too much but I have got belief in his potential and if he has someone to play alongside him then he can be City's number one striker. But part of the reason Dan got his chance was the departure of Rolando Bianchi for Lazio on loan last week, and I was sorry to see him go. When a player leaves your club it is often a bit of a surprise and that was how it went with Rolando - the deal was done so fast that we didn't get a chance to give him a proper send off and it is a bit gutting. I have spoken to him this week though and I am sure we will meet up again soon. He was really popular in the dressing room and, even if he didn't fully adjust to England and English football, he certainly made the effort - that is the type of guy he is. |

The last thing manager Sven-Goran Eriksson said to the Manchester City players before we went out at Old Trafford on Sunday was "don't be afraid". He told us that we were better than Manchester United so we had nothing to worry about. We believed it. He gave us that confidence and we did it - we beat them. It was an amazing day. City had not won there for 34 years, so to be part of a team to manage it is phenomenal. | I watched the match again before training on Monday morning and I noticed a couple of tackles that myself and Richard Dunne made - we definitely made sure we got stuck into them |
Our preparation was for the same as any other match, we all met up in a hotel the night before the game, drove to the training ground then went to Old Trafford by coach. We always stay in the same place in Manchester city centre, whenever we play in the north-west, home or away. You may think it is a bit strange but I like it. It is good for team bonding. We get there at about 6pm and always have a general knowledge quiz the night before the game, which is run by Les Chapman our kit-man. We do not split into teams, it is every man for himself! The best by far is Didi Hamann, he has got a lot of knowledge, and the worst has got to be Kelvin Etuhu. He is actually good academically but some of his answers are ridiculous. Me, I'm in the middle somewhere. I have not really got a specialist subject, although I normally do well with the music questions. | 606: DEBATE |
We are normally up until 11pm but we went to bed a bit earlier on Saturday because of the early kick-off on Sunday. We were up early in the morning and out and about at 10am for a team walk, then we had our pre-match meal, which is pasta or rice with chicken - the usual stuff. We arrived at Old Trafford at 12.15pm. There was a lot to think about before the game, with the minute's silence for the Munich air disaster. I wouldn't say it distracted me ahead of the match but, of course, you notice what is happening and take it in. As soon as the whistle was blown though, it was strange how I blocked all of that out and just concentrated on the game. I was really impressed by the City fans during the silence. For them to keep quiet, especially after what happened before last week's England international, was a good thing. And they were absolutely amazing during the match too. In fact, that was the best I have ever seen them, they just did not stop singing. The City players were really up for the game too. We wanted to show it was not only United who were turning up and that we had quality as well. I watched the match again before training on Monday morning and I noticed a couple of tackles that myself and Richard Dunne made - we definitely made sure we got stuck into them! It was a great feeling when Darius Vassell scored our first goal and, when the second went in, it was almost unreal. The main thing that was said to us at half-time was to keep our focus. Micah applauds the Man City fans after Sunday's win at Old Trafford |
Apparently, United win a huge percentage of their games in the last 20 minutes of the match. We were warned about that - and not to think we had won when it got to that stage. We were disappointed to concede a goal at the end but that did not matter when the final whistle went. It was the best moment of my club career. I have heard that United have blamed the defeat on player fatigue but I do not think that is a valid excuse. I may not have played for England last week but I had to go through the same as their players and train twice a day. It wasn't just United's players who did it, we all did. Plus England were at home. Many other players at City were away playing abroad so they had flights to contend with too. |
