| Pearce on Paraguayan trail Mon, Oct 16 2006 10:31 Stuart Pearce is battling with Sheffield United and Blackburn to land the services of Paraguayan defender Jorge Nunez. The Blues boss has been alerted to the news that Nunez is up for grabs on a free transfer after cancelling his contract with Uruguayan side Estudiantes. However, he faces stiff competition to land his man, with Blades chief Neil Warnock understood to be leading the chase having offered the 28-year-old a trial spell at Bramall Lane. A member of the Paraguay squad that reached the last 16 of the summer's World Cup, Nunez is a free agent and can therefore sign for a club outside of the transfer window.
A split-personality left-back, Nunez is brilliant going forward, full of energy, technically-assured, a good crosser of the ball and can thump a mean free-kick. In many ways, he plays like a genuine winger. However, on the debit side, he can get carried away with the overlapping and tends to forget his defensive duties and his marking, in particular, can leave a lot to be desired. The answer could be use to him as a wide-midfielder, where his relaxed approach is not so costly.
He has spent a large part of his career in Argentine football, first at Racing Club, now with Estudiantes de la Plata. Might be worth a go on a free. Doesn't sound too hot defensively but if it meant not having to play Reyna on the left MF then I'm all for it.
you know, you know, if a feller named Monroe never fathered bluegrass he would still be unrecognised as the grand wizard of speed metal

| | Whilst its encouraging to see us going for a left winger, is anybody else discouraged that most of our targets are shared with the likes of Blackburn and Sheffield united, sides not noted for playing "Football"? |

| | I watched him at the World Cup and I remember him playing quite well (I'm sure it was him). Would be good to sign him, especially as he is a left-sided midfielder. Surely we could beat Sheffield Utd to his signiture? |

| | apparently not Ex-Everton left-back Michael Ball wants a Premiership return with Sheffield United in January because he is not happy at PSV Eindhoven but the Blades will first turn to Paraguayan Jorge Nunez, who flew in yesterday. (Daily Mirror)
