Teenager admits schoolboy murder
Joe Geeling
Joe was last seen making the short walk home from school
A 15-year-old has pleaded guilty to the murder of an 11-year-old boy who was stabbed to death and dumped in a Greater Manchester park.

Joseph Geeling was beaten, stabbed and then left in Whitehead Park, Bury, on 1 March 2006.

Michael Hamer, who was 14 at the time of the attack, admitted murder before the start of his trial at Manchester Crown Court.

Hamer admitted responsibility for killing Joe at an earlier hearing.

A massive search was launched for Joe, a cystic fibrosis sufferer, after he failed to return home from school.

He had left St Gabriel's High in the afternoon and was last seen by fellow pupils on Manchester Road at about 1600 GMT on the day he died.

His worried parents raised the alarm after he failed to return home to be taken to hospital for treatment for his condition.

Stab wounds

Police, firefighters, a mountain rescue team and members of Joe's family searched for the youngster in freezing temperatures.

His body was found hidden under debris in a tree-lined gulley in the park the next day.

A post-mortem examination revealed he had been stabbed to death.

Hundreds of mourners, including the search team, attended his funeral in Bury on 31 March.

Joe's family sat in the public gallery at Manchester Crown Court on Monday to hear Hamer answer the murder charge.

Flanked by lawyers in benches before the judge, having been excused from the dock, he responded with a quiet "guilty".

You have to point the finger at the parents. Kid was 14 at time, he is either mentally unwell or a waste of life.

If his parents couldnt control him they should put their hands up and seek help, a kid doesnt just suddenly stab another kid without showing other disturbing signs.

This is out and out sad.

As Danny says, you've got to ask questions about the parents haven't you?

Question them yes, but i don't agree that he must have shown signs of disturbance before this. Maybe amongst a group of friends, but maybe he was controlled in front of his parents. I think the only place you can place blame here is on the individual, and he is obviously affected by things that are not of his own control. You have to be menally ill to murder someone.

Fair point, hard to tell from a distance.
