We seem to have had a bit of an injury jinx over the last year or so but no-one comes close to Newcastle do they?

Avoid, rather than check. Check, rather than hurt. Hurt, rather than maim. Maim, rather than kill. For all life is precious, nor can any be replaced.

Newcastle are about the only club I can think of that have had it worse than us. The annoying thing with us though is that most of the injuries at the moment happened in training.

Well it's not surpising when you've got Ben Thatcher, Joey Barton etc. roaming round after everyone

Vassell has to switch date for comeback

Darius Vassell
Darius Vassell
DARIUS Vassell is still a week away from making his much- anticipated return from injury.

The Blues striker's progress was halted last week by illness but he will resume work this week with the target the televised Monday night game against Middlesbrough on October 30.

That is also the date pencilled in for the return to action of Ben Thatcher who is still serving an eight-match club and Football Association ban imposed for his clash with Portsmouth's Pedro Mendes.

Nedum Onuoha is also on the verge of returning to the fray after a series of niggling injuries but Jihai Sun, Ousmane Dabo and Andreas Isaksson remain longer-term casualties.

"If Darius has a very good week he could be in contention for Wigan on Saturday but more likely it will be a week later," said assistant boss Steve Wigley.

Massage

"Nedum is on the same kind of time scale and but Jihai Sun hashad a setback."

Boss Stuart Pearce should, however, welcome back Nick Weaver for the short trip to the JJB.

The goalkeeper jarred his back in training 48 hours before the visit of Sheffield United and despite intensive massage, manipulation and a course of acupuncture just failed to make the contest, so handing teenager Joe Hart a Premiership debut.

Weaver is expected back between the posts on Thursday in preparation for the lunchtime contest at Wigan on Saturday.

American winger DaMarcus Beasley is also ready to contend for a place after shaking off an ankle injury.

There is, however, a doubt surrounding Ishmael Miller who tweaked a hamstring against Sheffield Wednesday.
