| | US teenage star Freddy Adu has signed for Benfica for £1.5m. (Daily Mirror) Teenage star? He's been touted as this for years. He must surely be the oldest teenager in town by now (barring our Cloudy). Perhaps he still is a teenager, but his birth date has been questioned. Plus, haven't a couple of English clubs checked him over and now he's off to benfica?!?! The saviour of football for the USA. ... from Ghana.

| Jimmy Conway (31/07/2007) I think when i first heard his name mentioned he must have only been about 14.He seems to have been around for such a long time, but hasn't made much of an impact yet. But his year of birth has been questioned by some.

| | when you first heard of him he was 14, and he is now about 18 or 19 I think. Apparently looked really good in a few MLS games this year and not surprised he has gone to a European league. He had a trial a United a couple of seasons ago, when he was 16 or 17 I think but I beleive the step from MLS to Prem is too big and he needed to move to a league such as Portugal to acclimatise to European football IMHO.

| Freddy just turned 18 in June... but yeah, he's been hyped since he was 13 or 14. His club team in the US is/was crap, but he played well for the US in the U-20 World Cup this summer & registered a hat trick against Poland.
The kid has a lot of talent, but even at 18 he seems like one of the smallest players on the field. (height:5'8" weight:145 lbs) Hopefully Benfica is able to turn him into a player worthy of all that hype. Should be a good move for him, as he wasn't going to get much better staying in the US. The teams over here just don't have the resources/experience to develop young talent. |

| Portugal looks like a good destination where you could start. As you know, players like Romario or Ronaldo started their european careers in Holland, which's almost the same as Portugal.
Going to England, Spain or Italy on just that young age is not possible for everybody. The pressure in these countries and leagues can kill you, so maybe Portugal looks like a good destination to start.

Courage, boy!

| PezJunkie (31/07/2007) Freddy just turned 18 in June... but yeah, he's been hyped since he was 13 or 14.
All players being hyped at young age are burned out at 26-27.
See Ronaldinho.
C. Ronaldo, Nani, Messi and Rooney will follow.
At the other hand players who breaked through at (say) 24/25 (Van Nistelrooy, Henry, A. Alves) will survive longer in football.
It's hilarious those YouTube movies from little boys (9, 10 years old) who are presented as the new 'Ronaldinho'. Nothing is being said about their mental development. IMHO one of the most important skills to achieve a top star status in football.
