Danny's Studs (22/07/2007)
Cloudy O' (22/07/2007)
The old man and the sea - Ernest Hemingway.

I started this book and found it too much, didnt finish. Too many complex characters, too many poeople talking in a thoroughly annoying fashion, too much description of scenes and of mens' clothes. Overall, way, way too verbose.

I realise he is a genius but will have to try another of his books if I am to acquire a taste of his style.

Try "A Farewell To Arms" - really stunning book set in WW1.

I'm not reading anything right now. What would you suggest?

Yes, all right.. Christ Almighty! It's like walking down a corridor and answering the door in Nazi Germany!

That explains it!

I must admit I was struggling with your description of Old Man and the Sea which is as straight forward as can be tbh.

That's the case with very many classics though, I always find it tough going to get into any classics at first, but usually find it worthwhile once I do.  Writing styles have vastly changed - whereas there used to be a lot of time spent setting the scene with the plot developing slowly, these days there generally has to be a dramatic event in the first couple of pages to grab people's attention. It's all symptomatic of the short attention span of today's generation - with so many other things available (TV, computer games, City forums ) vying for attention, a book really does have to grab you to make you stick with it.
