As far as I can see McClaren has just sacked himself.

The point of dropping Beckham wasn't about form, it was about stamping his own mark down. Now he has bowed down to FA, public and media pressure in bringing him back thus showing he hasn't got a clue as to what he's doing.
Don't misunderstand, I really wanted Beckham back and am glad for the country that he is, but McClaren really screwed his position here. Gone after the next 2 games, no matter what the result.

Yeah, but as I said earlier, has he now brought him back AFTER stamping his authority on the squad by dropping him?

Apparently, all the rumours about him not sharing a room with team mates, having the best room etc etc are bollocks. The Real Madrid players said all of it is rubbish, so have the England players. More journo bullshit to tarnish a player who has had a very good career.

Just because they didn't like Sven, once he went, then they had to have somebody else to pick on.

Give him his chance and I think he'll probably prove everybody wrong as he has been doing all his career. IMO.

Thats a good point and I'd love to see McClaren turn it all around, but it just feels like he's gone backwards instead of forwards. He has to work with the stigma of been around during Svens era anyway, and dropping the talisman of that time made a distinction between the squads. Due to the dropping been such a big deal at the time, the media have pinned that on McClaren rightly or wrongly.
Personally, I understand why he has been brought back, I mean which other right mid showed the form that Beckham has done recently and also has the amount of experience that he has at this level?
I just think that the media will blow this up to be McClaren folding in on a decision and showing a lack of foresight.

I think he was right to drop him and should have others as well. Its not going back on a decision, its picking a player in fantastic form who has earned the right to have another go in my books and thats all Sven 2 has to say.

He never said that Becham would never play under him, he has dropped other players and brought them back in,whats the difference.

No difference Barca, but Maclaren could have explained his reasons why at the time, but led everybody to believe that Beckham was finished as far as he was concerned. Did you ever hear him refute the allegations that the papers were throwing in his direction? I didn't.

Clever in hindsight, as he now HAS to call on an IN-FORM Beckham, as the rest of our so called GOOD players are unable to perform at the highest level.

He's made his point...now let's get on with qualifying, getting a decent England coach and doing well in the competition....because if Maclaren is an International coach....I'm a cross between

What is an Inappropriate friendly?

Lalas warns England over Beckham
David Beckham
He has a responsibility on and off the field to our organisation and our sport and he recognises that

Alexi Lalas on David Beckham
LA Galaxy general manager Alexi Lalas has warned England coach Steve McClaren he will not be happy if David Beckham is picked for inappropriate friendlies.

The 32-year-old midfielder's England recall raises the prospect of him playing internationals when he moves to the United States from Real Madrid.

"I don't want to stand in the way of a player representing his country but they have to be the appropriate games.

"But his call-up is wonderful," Lalas told BBC Five Live.

"We have a Galaxy player who is in the mix for the England team and it is a no-brainer as far as I'm concerned.

"You have one of the best players in the world who is at the top of his game right now playing at Real Madrid."

However, Major League Soccer side Galaxy have sold thousands of season tickets on the back of Beckham's arrival - once he has seen out the season in Spain.

Lalas conceded: "We will deal with it from a business perspective but for us to say one of our players is representing England internationally is a great thing.

"There are business challenges but there is an educated public here when it comes to this international game we play. We recognise that when we are going out and getting these stars they have responsibilities, domestically and internationally.

England manager Steve McClaren
England boss McClaren recalled Beckham to face Brazil and Estonia

"It is no different than when our American players are called up to play in different tournaments. We lose them at different times and we deal with it on the field and off it.

"I would think they would have to be competitive matches. If it works out scheduling-wise, we would be happy to let him go.

"From a business perspective, it is not the greatest news as we are selling a team with David Beckham in it and a lot of people are excited about seeing him play with the Galaxy.

"He has a responsibility on and off the field to our organisation and our sport and he recognises that.

"There is a bigger picture and I would never stand in the way of any of our players representing their country - I know how important it is and what an honour it is. We will sit down and talk to him."

And Lalas insists that the standard of football in the US will not hinder Beckham's chances of staying in McClaren's plans.

AUTUMN INTERNATIONALS
8 Sept: England v Israel
12 Sept: England v Russia
13 Oct: England v Estonia
17 Oct: Russia v England
21 Nov: England v Croatia

"There was an undercurrent of whether he was on his way down and if he was going to the US to hang out," added Lalas.

"That is certainly not the case and the fitness part isn't a problem.

"In fact I would argue the MLS is more physically taxing than other leagues.

"We understand we're a developing league but I refuse to think a player can't develop in MLS as well as other leagues and if he is lucky enough to be called up while he is playing with the Galaxy he will be mentally and physically fit.

"If he misses a cross or doesn't score a goal people will say it is because he is in America. If he is playing well they will say it is because he is a brilliant player. We probably can't win either way."

Beckham celebrated his recall by helping Real move a step closer to the Spanish title.

He set up two goals in a 3-1 win over Deportivo La Coruna and manager Fabio Capello said: "He's in extraordinary physical condition.

"When he puts the ball into the centre he does it with much precision, speed and quality. He's in great shape."

Ruud van Nistelrooy scored the third goal and added: "I wish David wasn't leaving as he is playing so well now.

"Maybe the Galaxy can loan him out to Madrid for a year. I'm not sure that is going to happen but I would love it if it did.

"It is well deserved for him to be back in the England squad.

"He's at the top of his game and is maybe as good as he has ever been."

No point in bringing back a 32 year old, and certainly not one thats going to be playing in a mickey mouse league next season. He'll come back for two or three games max and to what end? It wont help the development of our younger players and frankly, if we can't beat Estonia with SWP or Lennon or whoever on the right flank then we may as well give up any hope of qualifying anyway. McLaren has proved himself to be just as lame and lacking in vision as SGE.

SWP in the squad until he gets a run with chelsea, playing well and he's dropped again.

the job as england manager seems so easy, yet they always make it so hard.

Cool Cool Coolio...

the trouble with football is - if your not playing well - beckham for the last 3 years  - you have to drop them - if they start playing well - and Madrids surge to the top of la liga is mainly down to him  - what do you do?

Personally - going back smacks of weakness, once your dropped thats your lot - especially when your 32

i think he should never have been dropped in the first place.  Even if he didn't play every game he would have been a good sub to bring on with 30 minutes to go.  Thats basically what he does at Real Madrid.  Personally i always thought he dropped the wrong person, keep Beckham, drop Lampard and play Gerrard in the middle with Hargreaves next to him.

I never understood why Beckham was always blamed for England being rubbish, the last world cup, our results were

1-0 v Paraguy - own goal but really it was Beckhams goal

2-0 v Tobago - he crossed for the first goal

2-2 V Sweden - didn't do much

1-0 V Ecudor - He scored the goal

0-0 V portugal - he went off injured.

So basically he won us two games.  If he was as good a player as he is but without all the show business stuff there would be no problem and we would rave about him.  However all the media want him to fail just because how famous he is.  In Spain he is meant to be playing outstanding at the moment and Madrid are regretting letting him go.  The whole dropping him in the first place always made me think that Mclaran was a small man who just wanted to make a name for himself.  Football wise Beckham is easily one of the top 22 players in England.

Terry determined to save McClaren

Estonia v England (Wed 6 June)
Live on Sky Sports and BBC Radio Five Live, highlights on BBC ONE

England skipper John Terry has admitted coach Steve McClaren could lose his job if they lose in Estonia.

England face Brazil in a friendly on Friday before a must-win Euro 2008 qualifier in Estonia five days later.

"Will there be a question mark over him if England lose? Possibly. But we are not thinking like that," Terry said.

"We need to go there and get a win. It is as simple as that. We are fully behind the manager and we are going to do our best to keep him in his job."

England head to Estonia for Wednesday's game in fourth place in Group E and knowing only a win will do after some disappointing results.

Terry added: "We need to go there and perform. The Brazil game is a chance for us to get our sharpness back and make sure we are ready for the game on Wednesday."

Terry is pleased to have David Beckham - the player he replaced as skipper after the World Cup last summer - back in the squad.

He said: "It is great to have him back. We all know his quality and he has brought that into training and we look forward to seeing him training.

"It is not strange for me. We are all important players in the squad and it is just great to have him back.

"I had a few chats with Steve and the form he has been in is exceptional since he came back from injury. It couldn't go unnoticed. The manager has brought him in and rightly so."

I will stand or fall by this decision

Steve McClaren on Beckham's recall
McClaren has praised David Beckham for earning a recall to the national squad.

Real Madrid midfielder Beckham, 32, was named in a McClaren squad for the first time - his first inclusion since the 2006 World Cup.

McClaren said: "He showed great hunger and desire to get back. He didn't moan, just got his head down and worked hard.

"I have not made this decision for anyone, it is about form. He is the fittest I have seen for a long time."

Beckham last played for England in the World Cup quarter-final defeat against Portugal last July, after which he resigned the captaincy and has not been selected in any of McClaren's nine previous squads.

He was also dropped by Real Madrid in January after agreeing to join Major League Soccer side LA Galaxy when his contract with the Spanish side runs out at the end of the season.

But coach Fabio Capello eventually recalled Beckham and he has produced some stunning displays to lead Real to the top of La Liga, with two games left.

McClaren added: "You've got to respect the work Fabio Capello is doing at Real Madrid.

"He has had the same problems as me. He had no hesitation about bringing David back when he was on form and that has changed the fortunes of Real Madrid.

"I would be very foolish to ignore that.

I have played against them a couple of times and scored both times

Michael Owen on facing Brazil
"After one match, Capello said David ran 15 kilometres and the next highest figure was 12km. In another he ran 80 yards in the last minute to create a winning goal.

"I will stand or fall by this decision but anyone who has watched David closely over the last few weeks and months must understand why he is in the squad."

Also returning to the England squad is Michael Owen, who has been ruled out since the World Cup after injury.

The Newcastle striker is delighted to be back playing for his country and taking on the might of Brazil at Wembley.

He said: "I feel fine. It feels great to be back in the fold. I played in the England B game last week but obviously this is the real stuff now.

"The way Brazil play, the stars they produce, their kit - everything about them means you couldn't wish for a more exciting game to start off with at Wembley.

"I have played against them a couple of times and scored both times."

Owen scored in a 1-1 friendly draw with Brazil in one of the last England's last games at the old Wembley stadium in 2000 and in their World Cup quarter-final defeat in 2002.

He also scored against Brazil for England Under-15s on his first ever appearance at Wembley.
