If Beckham gets back into the England team, is this a step in the right direction?

Is the manager panicking about the public support or lack of it he's received since his appointment and Beckham is a panic solution? Or has the manager now stamped his authority on the squad and will now allow Beckham back, to show he is the boss, not Beckham?

I'm personally torn between whether he should or shouldn't be in the squad.

Pro's - he is still a quality crosser of the ball, probably still the best in the world. As a free-kick taker, not many better. We haven't scored anywhere near enough free-kicks since his omission from the squad.

Con's - he doesn't have the speed to get past players, but who has actually really grabbed that position and consistently gone past the defender and got decent crosses in? Lennon? Maybe, but still not enough. SWP? Not really had the opportunity.

Gerrard has been played wide right and he isn't a natural winger, just does the same that Beckham did.

Without sitting on the fence - I'd say try him. Gerrard more central behind Rooney and possibly Owen.

Hargreaves as the holding player.

Carrick or Barry on the left.

My team.

                                    Robinson

if fit Richards          Ferdinand        Terry           Cole

if not Carragher

                               Hargreaves

Beckham                                                      Carrick

                                 Gerrard

                       Rooney            Owen

Subs: SWP, King, Crouch, Foster, Bridge, Lennon, Barton, Barry

Personally, i'd give David Bentley a go.  He's looked good when i've seen him.

Forgot about him bassman. Agree, he looked good in the U-21's.

Would you play him instead of Beckham?

As far as I can see McClaren has just sacked himself.

The point of dropping Beckham wasn't about form, it was about stamping his own mark down. Now he has bowed down to FA, public and media pressure in bringing him back thus showing he hasn't got a clue as to what he's doing.
Don't misunderstand, I really wanted Beckham back and am glad for the country that he is, but McClaren really screwed his position here. Gone after the next 2 games, no matter what the result.

Yeah, but as I said earlier, has he now brought him back AFTER stamping his authority on the squad by dropping him?

Apparently, all the rumours about him not sharing a room with team mates, having the best room etc etc are bollocks. The Real Madrid players said all of it is rubbish, so have the England players. More journo bullshit to tarnish a player who has had a very good career.

Just because they didn't like Sven, once he went, then they had to have somebody else to pick on.

Give him his chance and I think he'll probably prove everybody wrong as he has been doing all his career. IMO.

He has been in amazing form for Madrid and if he continues for the next three games, the way he has since Christmas, then he will get his first La Liga Championship Medal.

I am not his biggest fan, but if someone with his Experience and calibur is playing so well, then you would be stupid not to include him.

The last England performances have been awful, and even if he gives the team a lift it would be good !!

No way! Mainly flopped on the international stage. Always seemed to be more of a club player. How many chances does a bloke need?
Next everyone will be saying that Fat Frank deserves his England place!!!!

Thats a good point and I'd love to see McClaren turn it all around, but it just feels like he's gone backwards instead of forwards. He has to work with the stigma of been around during Svens era anyway, and dropping the talisman of that time made a distinction between the squads. Due to the dropping been such a big deal at the time, the media have pinned that on McClaren rightly or wrongly.
Personally, I understand why he has been brought back, I mean which other right mid showed the form that Beckham has done recently and also has the amount of experience that he has at this level?
I just think that the media will blow this up to be McClaren folding in on a decision and showing a lack of foresight.
