Robson has been out of a job since leaving West Brom in September |
Sheffield United have called a press conference for Tuesday where they are expected to name Bryan Robson and Brian Kidd as their new management team. BBC Five Live understands former West Brom boss Robson will take charge, with Kidd moving up from a coaching role to become assistant boss at Bramall Lane.
Chairman Terry Robinson said the club had drawn up three shortlists to fill the vacancy left by Neil Warnock.
Warnock resigned following the Blades' relegation from the Premiership.
Kidd, who joined the Blades as a coach in September, is likely to succeed Stuart McCall as assistant manager.
McCall is expected to take over as Bradford City boss, replacing caretaker David Wetherall, who was appointed following Colin Todd's departure in February.
The Scot was overlooked for the Blades post along with former Fulham manager Chris Coleman. Warnock ended his eight-year reign at the club on 16 May - the day after United's relegation from the Premiership.
Robson parted company with West Brom by mutual consent in September and has since set up a sports consultancy business that he is reportedly reluctant to leave.
But Sheffield United are keen to install a new manager quickly and Robinson said on Saturday: "The timeframe for appointing is really to get everything sorted out as soon as possible.
"We are doing the groundwork so that he can decide, possibly as early as next week."
Robinson has previously spoken of the club's admiration for Robson, saying that a candidate of his calibre and experience would be ideal.
He told the club's website: "People know that we are looking for experience.
"So people like Bryan Robson, Peter Reid and even Dave Bassett would fit the bill in many ways.

"Chris Coleman is another that we have heard mentioned and, although he has good experience as a footballer and manager at the top level, he doesn't fit all of the criteria, in terms of managing at Championship level."
Robson has experience of winning promotion, having guided Middlesbrough to the top flight in 1995 and, after a relegation, in 1998.
He successfully kept West Brom in the Premiership in 2005 but they were relegated last year and Robson left the club after a disappointing start to the subsequent campaign.
Kidd's previous roles include an assistant management post at Manchester United, a stint as manager of Blackburn and a job as part of former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson's backroom staff.
