Man City to pay up to £200,000 for former Coventry youngster
11:09 September, 28, 2006
A Football League appeals committee has reached a decision on Daniel Sturridge's move from the Coventry City academy to Manchester City

The 17-year-old striker, whose displays in youth and reserve team football have already led to reports of interest from Chelsea, was with the Sky Blues for a short period as a 12 and 13-year-old.

Manchester City will pay £30,000 immediately, with the fee rising to £200,000 based on various clauses.

A 10% sell-on clause has also been awarded.

"We are very satisfied with the settlement which we think is excellent considering it is based on a 13-year-old who was with us for just 14 months," said Coventry's finance director Mal Brannigan.

"We are to receive £30,000 now and then a further £30,000 after the lad makes five first team appearances, £30,000 again if he makes 15, a further £30,000 if he makes 25 and a final £30,000 if he makes 40 first team appearances.

"On top of that, we will receive £50,000 if he goes on to make a senior international appearance, and will get 10 per cent of any sell on."

Although this seems quite alot for somebody they only had for 14 months I would be very pleased if we had to pay all the fee because it would mean that he was a success and would probably be worth a substasntial sum

Better to sort these potential problems out now than they become an issue at sometime in the future.

£200k isn't exactly a lot of money these days. Arsenal paid £10m for Walcott

If he turns out to be successful enough to trigger all those payment clauses then I will be very happy with £200k.

If he becomes that good I'd like to avoid the need for a sell on clause though!

Well that's true, he will just have to stay with us for his whole career.

It was decided on by a tribunal so we had no choice. We could, of course, try to buy it out but at what point? The offer would have to be worth it for Coventry and obviously the better he gets the greater the amount that would need to be paid. Do we offer to buy it out now? A gamble but most cost efficient. If we seem too keen are Cov going to say no are ask for a ridiculous fee? I think we should maybe test the water now though.

Am I the only one confused here. Why do we have to give coventry money for someone who was 12 or 13 at the time? How comes its taken four years to resolve this?

I dont understand, he could only sign a contract for us back in september, so what claim do coventry have?

I don't get it either, if we were to give them money wouldn't that have been when we first got him? And how a 12-13 year old can earn a club potentially 200k when he was only there for a year is quite odd to me.

Yeah, I don't get this - he's been at city for years and without our support and coaching he'd be nothing, (we took the gamble on him) and yet we still pay a potential fortune to a club he was at before he hit puberty - and only for  a year.  Seems crazy - The first £30K for nothing then another £30k after only 5 games- that means we have to pay £12K a game just to see if he can hack it (and that's on top of his wages) - I hope he didn't have a Saturday job at Macdonalds when he was 14 or we''l probably owe them a Million or 2.............
