REF WINTER: I HATED MILLS & BOWYER
Repka 'impossible' too but Ince was a real man
By Lee West

FORMER Premiership referee Jeff Winter has named Lee Bowyer, Danny Mills and Tomas Repka as the biggest nightmares in the English game.

The Middlesbrough-born official lifted the lid on football's worst whingers yesterday, claiming the trio were "impossible" to deal with.

And while Winter, who retired from top-flight refereeing in 2004, was full of praise for old pros like Paul Ince, he claimed that West Ham star Bowyer, Manchester City's Mills and ex-Czech Republic defender Repka were unbearable.

He said: "The players I used to hate facing were Danny Mills, Lee Bowyer and Tomas Repka, to name three.

"Other players I'd have great fun with. Guys like Paul Ince understood that it's a man's game and instead of giving him a lecture I'd say 'F*** off Incey', and he'd react to that a lot better.

"Most players I could have a laugh with but there were some who were just impossible."

Winter, who is promoting his autobiography 'Who's The B***ard In The Black?', also cast aspersions on the influence of club chairmen on the panel responsible for appointing referees.

He claims he was not given a Manchester United match for two years after sending Roy Keane off during a game with Southampton in 2000.

"In England there is an organisation called Professional Game Match Officials who appoint referees," he said.

"The Chief Executive of the Premier League is on that, as are some club chairmen.

"Now that is a situation where someone could have a little word. I'm not saying that is what's happened with me - I'm saying that it's possible.

"I sent Sir Alex Ferguson to the stand at St James' Park in a game that was live on Sky.

"On the TV they clearly showed him saying 'you f***ing cheat'.

"When we came to the disciplinary hearing they showed the video and that bit of footage was missing, which obviously helped their case. That seemed pretty odd."

Keeper of the heretic's fork of doom.

For starters, how can a referee issue cautions for foul and abusive language if this is how they speak to the players? Can you imagine a techer asking "Why haven't you done you fucking homework again?" A referee should be a disciplinarian on the field, not the players' mate as so many seem keen to be nowadays

As for this; why is it some club Charimen? shouldn't be all or none? It wouldn't take a genius to figure out which clubs have representatives at this level I bet

He liked Thatcher then?

Btw, anyone know who's paying Mrs Mills wages now? Are Leeds still chipping in or is that over?

Avoid, rather than check. Check, rather than hurt. Hurt, rather than maim. Maim, rather than kill. For all life is precious, nor can any be replaced.

I'm not danny mill's biggest fan by any stretch of the imagination (I think the club should cut their losses, and pay him off even if its just to free up a locker), but Jeff Winters is the worst type of person to be expressing an opinion. Not only was he an egotistical interfering referee, but now he's retired he is doing everything possible to publicise his autobiography, and offering opinions on everything.
