The Football Association is set to demand that England play more friendlies, with Soho Square chiefs offering a guaranteed 18 friendlies and 10 competitive ties in tender documents released to television firms. (Daily Express)

Not about the money then?

Christ.  There's maybe one friendly every two years where we actually learn something constructive about England.  The rest are a disorganised shambles.

I can't see The FA having too many sell-outs for these friendlies in the current climate.

Surely we need our top players to play less games not more? Every fucking tournament the squad is ravaged by injury, why make matters worse?

Certain managers (mentioning no names) already moan and whinge about having too many games - despite also wanting two league group stages for the Champions League.  All this will mean is that their players will be withdrawn from more international squads with 'injuries', so the teams played in these friendlies will barely resemble the team seen in tournaments, and nothing will be learnt about the way the 'untouchables' play together.

Here's something else which is 'just what we need' as well.  Just picture it... "I haven't a clue how to do my job and don't have the balls to stand up to some of my employees.  Hmm, who shall I go to to discuss the underperformance of a bunch of overpaid, egotistical, over-influential employees and draw conclusions about what to do for the best??"

England boss Steve McClaren will reportedly hold a series of crisis meetings with his most influential players after the debacle of the Spain defeat.

The Daily Mail claims that McClaren will consult captain John Terry as well as Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Gary Neville, Rio Ferdinand and Wayne Rooney before the vital Euro 2008 qualifier against Israel next month.

McClaren has had the worst start of any England manager, with the insipid friendly defeat to Spain coming on the back of a goalless draw against Macedonia and defeat in Croatia.

This report suggests that some of the players 'privately questioned' McClaren's tactics in the Spain game, which saw Kieron Dyer playing behind Peter Crouch and Lampard playing nominally on the left.

It remains to be seen whether the players will dare to repeat these concerns to McClaren's face.

I am sure they are all nice lads but the combined brainpower there is slightly on the low side of negligible.
