I seem to remember that vast sums paid to aging has-beens bought about the collapse of Soccer in the US back in the 70's when Pele, Best and our very own Rodney Marsh amongst others had their snouts in the trough.

Couldn't happen now of course.............

The problem with the old NASL was that all those guys were on the same team. The rest of the league went bankrupt trying to keep up with the money that New York was spending.

Also, looks like most of the $250 million contract comes from sponsors & endorsements... Although Beckham, who leaves Real Madrid at the end of the season, will become the highest paid player for Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States, MLS sources say his annual playing income is only in the "single-figure millions." (from HERE)

Oh, and Barca Azul, AFAIK "you" also invented the word soccer, so you can't be too pissed when "we" choose to use it.

Yes very true, however its generally used here too by people that know fook all about Football. It just annoys me to distraction!!

I found the reason and the brains behind the operation now !!

AND FINALLY...

David Beckham phoned his Hollywood pal Tom Cruise for advice before deciding on his £128m move to LA. The former England captain said movie star and keen scientologist Cruise was a "very wise man and a very good friend". (Various)
