I seem to remember that vast sums paid to aging has-beens bought about the collapse of Soccer in the US back in the 70's when Pele, Best and our very own Rodney Marsh amongst others had their snouts in the trough.

Couldn't happen now of course.............

Why is it so important that footy takes off in the US anyway? Let them stick to their Netball, Rounders and Rugby with crash helmets.

Totally unimportant ESM but there's bucks to be made if they can bring it off. Personally, I think the Americanisation of the game has done much to destroy it's core values already. God knows what it would be like if they really got involved.

The yanks aren't gonna get involved, because they are too caught up in rounders.  Can you imagine them watching cricket.

Thanks for that TID, I haven't cleaned it since I got it, it must have been filthy.  It looks lovely now, though.

Anyway, seems that Davids may be the next to swan off across the pond for the almighty dollar

Edgar Davids has become the next player to be linked to an American side, after FC Dallas claimed to be in talks with the Spurs player.

The Dutch midfielder has been deemed surplus to requirements at Tottenham after failing to hold down a regular first-team place this season.

Former Arsenal midfielder Steve Morrow, manager of FC Dallas, has claimed that the North London side are willing to listen to offers for Davids - and it has emerged that the MLS side are leading the way.

"We are actually in negotiations with Edgar Davids - we've been speaking for a couple of weeks," said Morrow.

"We were excited to hear about his availability, so we spoke to his agents and have been told he is available."

After David Beckham's move it appears that the former Ajax and Juventus man will be the next big player to cross the pond.

"It appears Tottenham are willing to listen to offers" Morrow added.

"It's the transfer window in the United States now - and if a deal is going to happen it has to be done before the end of the month."

Davids joined Spurs from Inter Milan on free transfer in 2005 but has struggled to break into the first team this year. He has made only eight appearances, the last coming in the Carling Cup quarter-final tie against Southend.

Keeper of the heretic's fork of doom.

That's not going to go down at all well with the other MLS players.  500 times more!  OK, the high profile name might temporarily lead to bigger crowds, like those seen in the old NASL days, but that league ultimately couldn't be sustained and it folded.  The way MLS was set up meant that you couldn't get the big names going over there for one last huge payday any more, and to change the rules for the benefit of one player is frankly ridiculous.  Although by American standards the contract is not as extraordinary as it first seems to us, this is football, and it will never be as popular or attract the revenues that other sports do.  I can see this backfiring on LA Galaxy big time.

So if he wanted to promote football to American kids, why did the wage cap rules have to be changed for him to sign?  Surely he could just about manage to survive on the wages that the top US players earn, and if it was all about trying to bring the sport to America he would have been willing to do so.  Maybe he will plough some of his loot into the grass roots of the game - just think how many kids could get top class coaching for that money.  Oh wait, there goes that flying pig again...

I think fair play to him.  People can complain about the money as much as they like but who in there right mind would turn down that sort of cash.  Bolton for 40k a week or LA for 70K a day.  I think i know who i would sign for!

Everyone says that Beckham is stupid but he clearly is a business genius!

Now I always had Charley mouse down as thick as pig shit, but he is clearly not or has very good advisers.

The spanish are gutted that after three years he managed to learn one word in Spanish, a swear one, that he's off........not, but they are more disappointed that his laughing stock wife is going. They murder her over here, which is nice!!

If he wasn't doing it for the money, then surely he will play for free to make history. Now that would have an impact im sure!!

I wonder if they will call it Beckham series League in the future.

I cant see it working either, and Frankly, I couldn't give a shit.........and stop calling it soccer, its football you fuckers, we invented it !!

Go back to playing your telepizza Rugby sport for big girls blouses and your fat assed society!! (talking of which, how will the anorexic wife fit in?)

Its Ironic that 2 of the three most popular sports over there involve running for less than 20 seconds at a time and that the average American is Obese !!
