Stuart Pearce has again hinted that he is interested in luring Shaun Wright-Phillips back to City in the January transfer window. But would the Blues' board be prepared to stump up the necessary £10 million? | Buying Wright-Phillips back for £10 million would still represent a whopping £11 million profit on the deal that took him to Stamford Bridge 16 months ago.
A paltry 36,000 turned up for the last home game against Fulham and the alarming slump in attendances will continue unless the board are prepared to sanction the purchase of players who can set the terraces buzzing again.
And who better to do that than Wright-Phillips, still adored by the City faithful despite his decision to leave at the beginning of last season.
Following revelations that West Ham, backed by their new Icelandic owner's millions, had made an enquiry about the 25 year-old, Chelsea's chief executive Peter Kenyon has hinted for the first time that Chelsea will be prepared to listen to offers for Wright-Phillips in January.
So two questions remain.
First, would Wright-Phillips be prepared to return to the club where he made his name? London born and bred, he may prefer to stay in the Smoke. Then there's the old adage about never going back. But surely the prospect of returning to his spiritual home and kick-starting the club and his own international career would be too exciting a challenge to turn his back on. Pearce knows what a boost it would be for the club to have Wright-Phillips back: "If a price was set and Chelsea were prepared to sell him, just think what a big lift it would give everyone here for Shaun to walk back through the door,"
Second, could and would the board be prepared to raise the money? The Blues' hierarchy have recently made noises about backing the manager in January, though to what extent is unclear. Are we talking about a million here and there for a couple of workmanlike Corradi's or Beasley's, or are they prepared to make a major investment in someone like Wright-Phillips.
Only the board knows the answer and we will know in January. But if they don't invest heavily in a squad currently bereft of flair, guile and excitement, we'd better get used to the idea of staring at empty blue seats and Championship football at Eastlands. |

A decent post ruined by your stupid negativity. OK, so we aren't playing the greatest football of all time, but at home we are looking good, 3-1 win against Fulham was a great win. Away from home we have been unlucky on a lot of occasions rather than just shite.
We do need a creative midfielder and a goal potcher (like Goater), but apart from that we have some really exciting young players at the club (Miller, Sturridge, Johnson, Onuha, Richards........) and they are all in or around the first team squad.
So, no need to talk about championship football at all, so leave it out. |

| The way the league is at the moment if we win 3 games from the next 5 we could be riding in the top 7 or 8, but lose 4 out of 5 and we could be fighting in the bottom 4 or 5. I don't for 1 minute think we'll go down this season but we need a run of decent away form to gaurantee a higher than 15th finish. And there are 3 or 4 teams worse than us (at the moment) to keep the bottom spots filled (luckily). I don't see us getting many more than 43 points this season (& I really do hope City buy in Jan and prove me wrong by 15 points).

| I'll chime in here and say that altho MRAMB was definitely a little over the top with the champship call, I do agree with exciting football shout and empty seats.
There is a lot to be said for goals (and I mean that in all seriousness). I loved watching City during the Rosler, Quinn and Kinky era's, we may have lost most matches but you were guaranteed goals. Even KK's time when we were erratic to say least we saw some great goals thru the Elk and the Goat. Goals gets punters on seats.
The PLeague does actually dictate this to some degree, it has become a defensive game. At the risk of inviting flak from others here, if we were scoring goals, I'd be making a better effort to get myself from London to COMS more often as it is not a cheap affair all things told.

| The problem we have is that we are not keegans city anymore, and in all fairness SWP was a keegan-esque player. Would he fit in the way stu plays the game? I cant deny the prospect of a return wets the appetite, but i cant help feeling if it goes tits up, the boo-boys will be on his back. I am50/50 on him returning..... I think trabelsi and richards are doing well down the right but stu has been hinting on a central role for micah.... so would trabelsi/SWP work??? i dont know for sure, i like trabelsi in the midfield , he's a strong tackler and is intelligent in his play.. we played a lot of football through SWP when he was with us, and i felt we became slightly un-balanced and predicatable as often SWP was marked out of the game and kicked about...on the same page you could argue that now richards is being recognised as an england player then for shaun it would do no harm linking up with richards at city....club & country. I only hope that stu and the board do whats right for the club and dont bring him back to please the fans, because he needs to be right for the team...

| | Yeah, it's not me. It's come off Blue View. I'm not quite that negative - I don't think it's going to be anything near relegation this season, but I think without a bit of investment in a poacher, creative winger, right-mid and left back we shouldn't be looking to Europe for a few seasons. I just want us to hang on for a few seasons, and then when the debts gone we can start to invest as a club of our size should. If we can hang onto our better players until then, and pick up a few good bargains and good youth players, we can start to see some success. Remember that Sky TV money goes up by about £25 mill this season - that'll wipe out nearly all the outstanding debt and then we can begin to rise up the league again. I feel it would be a worthy investment to bring Shauny back, because seeing him at West Ham would be horrible. It'll all turn out allright in the end..

| I wouldn't want Stuart to splash out £10 million on shaun, he's worth about 6 at best, I'd rather see Lennon at the club. All this talk bout SWP coming back and Richards being linked to Chelsea is really starting to Wind me up big time |

| Stu's reportedly said that it would have to be some offer to tempt the sale of richards.....now forgive me if i am wrong didnt the board say the same thing about Sweep when Chelsea were sniffing after him, 22m later, shaun gets the 'ump and the rest is history.....Luckily micah doesnt have a footballer dad to sway his mind, it sounds like city may be tempted at the reported price??? would it make good business sense, i would say only if distin is staying.....

| | It would be very silly of Stuart or the board to Sale Micah to Chelsea whilst he's still young and learning his trade. The problem is though Stuart being Stuart he asks fer 15 million and say Chelsea were to offer say 25 million ( coz thats fook all to them) d'yer think Stuart will take the bait or Stick to his guns and keep all our youth team players coming through together so when they crack into the first team they all know each others game. |
