Elvis Presley - Classic case of Emporer's clothes imo.

The other one, although clearly not really an icon, is Kate Bush. Silly cow.

Don't let a certain Blue radio disc jockey hear you say that (not that there's much chance of that happening).

you know, you know, if a feller named Monroe never fathered bluegrass
he would still be unrecognised as the grand wizard of speed metal

Ok, here's another one: Pink Floyd post Syd Barrett.

"We don't need no education" eh? You went to Public School and then Oxford/Cambridge you cheeky feckers!

Self indulgent crap.

Engelbert Humperdinck.

Did you know Engelbert Humperdincks real name is Arnold George Dorsey and when he was embarking on a pop career he said, "you know, I'm never gonna make it with a name like Arnold Dorsey. I need to come up with a new name. I know! Engelbert Humperdinck".

What kind of drugs must he have been on to come up with that?

...and woe betide anyone who says its a good name.

Yes, all right.. Christ Almighty! It's like walking down a corridor and answering the door in Nazi Germany!

I think that everybody has their own music icons. so it's always going to be difficult to agree.

If I was asked for a list of people who had changed or influenced music and gained iconic status, they would be..

Elvis

Bob Dylan

The Beatles

The New York Dolls, (not the pistols)

Jackmaster Flash

Morrissey

And personally I'd chuck Ian Curtis into the frame, plus one of the early house/techno DJ's, which one is down to taste.

To not include the Velvet Underground in that list is a sin imo East Stand. Ok, it took Bowie's patronage to bring them to the mainstream but even so.......

I was going to add Lou Reed to the list, but they didn't really change the shape of music did they?
