oh fucksticks, thought this was a joke at first. can't believe we're actually going to see the manager sacked whilst we register our highest points/position in the premiership.

Perhaps this is the difference between Thaksin and all other chairmen we have had. We understand the history of City and are therefore delighted to finish 8th or 9th this season. Thaksin wants a top 4 finish if not a treble in year one.

Insanity of course, over-ambition of course, but perhaps, just perhaps this is actually what we need in order to push us on to actually winning stuff.

Sure, I'm playing Devil's Advocate here, but it is a valid point all the same.

but what did he invest? £40m at most.

in a season where liverpool bought torres (30m) babel (12m) mascherano (loan but valued at 20m) benayoun (6m) etc and united bought nani (17m) anderson (21m) hargreaves (17m) teves (20m)..... how is he expected to catch up by spending this much?

the only justification i can see for sacking sven is if he is about to plough £100m+ on transfers and thinks sven is too old to see the project through or has a top manager in line that he trusts his money with more.

Cool Cool Coolio...

Oooo, get her with her different point of view.

Interesting point of view and I see what your getting at, but if he thinks we can get top four with little investment and in the first year, then he is clearly a fool.

It will cost him a lot more in the long run, 12m to Sven to start with. Plus new managers wages, and if it wasnt a joke before then who would want the task now?

Plus its like admitting you got it completely wrong in the first place too if you ask me!! Less than one season FFS, laughing stock of football again!!

Feliz Año Neuvo

Has anywhere else confirmed the Beeb's take on things yet?  First off the stories were that Sven would walk out because he was pissed off, i.e. not Frank's doing.  Then it turned into stories (via his agent) that he expected to be sacked because Frank hadn't given him public backing, but he wouldn't resign, i.e. Frank's expected actions, but not done yet.  Now it's that he's been told he will be sacked, i.e. Frank has done the deed.  I'm not sure of the timings, but doesn't it suggest that Frank is supposed to have told Sven he's sacked before Sven's agent made his statement that he didn't know what was going to happen?  Obviously all the reports agree that he will be gone one way or another, but the details still seem very muddled.

Sven-Goran Eriksson set for return to Estadio da Luz?

Sven-Goran Eriksson

Italian coach, Marcello Lippi, has removed himself for the running of the vacant coaching position at Benfica. And former England head coach Sven-Goran Eriksson has now emerged as a strong favourite for the vacant position.

World Cup winning coach Lippi was one of the candidates on Benfica’s shortlist for the position, but has crossed his own name off the list, saying he is not interested in the job.

The former Juventus boss, who has not coached since winning the World Cup in 2006, told Portuguese daily O Jogo that he was well aware his name had been linked with the Lisbon club, but at the moment he is not yet looking to get back into coaching.

“Nobody has spoken to me about this subject. In any case, I can assure you that it is not in my plans to coach Benfica or anywhere else in Portugal,” confessed Lippi. “I am not saying this because I am questioning Benfica’s merit, nothing like that. They are a big club, but in spite of that, they are not a possibility that I am evaluating at this time.

“At this moment I will not accept any proposals. I will wait some more time to see what I will do. Would I go abroad? Maybe, but at this time I will not accept any invitation from any club,” the Italian added.

With Lippi officially taking himself out of the race, Benfica have one less name on the list of possible successors to Jose Antonio Camacho.
