As I only know one foreign language, I have decided to learn another.  Tomorrow evening I'll start learning French.

English presumably?

I need to learn some French lessons as I'm off to the Pyrenees soon.

You often see lessons advertised in phone boxes don't you?

Yes, the other foreign language is English.  I think I've got the hang of that (though Bert may disagree). I'm planning on learning my own language properly later this year.

I tried to learn some Scottish Gaelic once. Got absolutely nowhere with it.

Irish is taught in schools from the age of 4 until the day you leave.  Most peolple will pass the state exams but nobody can actually hold a coversation in Irish.  I was talking about this with a few of my workmates at lunch time.

I was ok in school but have hardly used it since.  I can understand the spoken word to a point and I'm not bad with the written word.

On RTE recently there was a documentary about the Irish language.  The presenter stood outside the Dail (Irish Parliament) and offered to give cash to anyone who understood what he was saying. As he was speaking in Irish he didn't have to give out a penny. People just stared at him.

This bloke was also kicked out of the Irish Tourist Board Office on O'Connell Street for asking questions in Irish.

I'm in a similar(ish) siuation: I already know some French from family holidays as a kid, then started learning Spanish a few months ago (there's a load of Spanish people in my lab, so I thought it would be a good opportunity).
Problem is, in my head there's two sections labelled 'English' and 'Other' so I keep getting French and Spanish mixed up. C'est un puta pequeno.

As a pikey I think it's good for you to learn more languages so others can understand.

As an Englishman I don't need to do this as if them foreign types don't understand we do one or all of the following.

Shout, point, thump, invade.

I have the same problem. We get foreign drivers in at work and last week I was trying to give some directions. I started off in German, threw in a couple of French words and waved him goodbye with "Buongiorno", just to really confuse him.

Too often, we lose sight of lifes simple pleasures. Remember, when someone annoys you it takes 42 muscles in your face to frown, BUT, it only takes 4 muscles to extend your arm and bitch-slap that mother....pass it on.
