Valeri Bojinov is set for a run-out with the reserves this week and could be in contention for the first team before the end of the season.

The Bulgarian striker’s season has been ruined by a cruciate ligament injury sustained just six minutes into his first start for the Blues in the home derby last August.

His rehabilitation programme under the careful supervision of the medical and physio team at Carrington now has him on the verge of a comeback, although Sven-Goran Eriksson says it was touch-and-go until the last few days.

“If you had asked me a week ago, I would have said ‘maybe’, but as of now I believe he will play before the end of the season,” Eriksson declares.

“On Tuesday he had an excellent training session, the best I have seen since he got injured.

“This Thursday the reserves play Liverpool, and he will take part in that, maybe for the last 20 or 30 minutes. He was much better this week than last, it’s looking much better for him.

“He’s doing everything in training now, he’s still far away from being 100% but it would be great for him, mentally, if he could get one more taste of the Premier League this season. I’m sure he wishes it was not ending so soon.”

I know it's a lot to ask but I really, really, really want Boji to be the answer to our striking woes. It might just be the anticipation of seeing him get run in the team but since he signed I've had a good feeling about the lad*.

*cue him being a bag of spanners with two club feet who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn.

you know, you know, if a feller named Monroe never fathered bluegrass
he would still be unrecognised as the grand wizard of speed metal

I said the same thing about Samaras and it took me until he went to Celtic on loan to realise he wasn't.

Valeri dont listen to us, you go about your job dude.

For him to be a success there'll need to be less fannying about and Sven has to give him the chance he's denied others.

He is our crown jewel, we have to make sure.

He'll be like a new signing next season though.

Not too long ago a cruciate injury would have been career ending-in't advances in medical science brilliant?

If cancer stopped lots of footballers playing they'd find a cure.
