| Why bother running round the streets with the torch anyway? I can't see the point myself and I couldn't believe that it was televised.

| ESM (07/04/2008) Least the frogs did a better job than us and actually put the torch out.Wasn't the protesters that put the torch out, twas the officials/whatjermacallums. You could say we are better than the frogs at policing protesters.

I was delighted to see the protests in London and Paris. It won't make any difference but people need to make a point about Tibet and the human rights abuses in China. I thought it was funny when the Chinese said politics and sport shouldn't be mixed. If that is the case then why are they hijacking the games for political means? You could argue that every host country does that. Whilst I agree that it's a good opportunity to raise the Tibet/China issue I also think if you really want to influence Chinese policy then boycott the products manufactured there. Not that you'd have much left in the shops to choose from if you did but it might do our economy a bit of good in the process. That's one reason I buy New Balance running shoes. Still made in Cumbria.

I distinctly remember the flame going out too. It was a student games or summat in Sheffield and that english teacher lady (Helen Something?) who went up in the shuttle fell over as she was carrying the torch, putting the flame out, Mind, she held the unlit torch to the big flamey bowl thing and oddly enough it lit.

If the UK (or any other EU coutry) boycotted Chinese products and services then our economies would be wiped out. Does every country use the Olympics for poitical reasons? Of course they do. The first time I remeber it turning into a fiasco was the Moscow Olympics. Rubbish Slart and furthermore we'd all go back to driving quality cars like the Austin Princess, the Ambassador and the legendary Morris Marina.
Avoid, rather than check. Check, rather than hurt. Hurt, rather than maim. Maim, rather than kill. For all life is precious, nor can any be replaced. |

They account for about 78% of the UKs GDP. And would you really like to see the streets full of naked chavs? And I haven't even got around to the take-away food.
