Protests against the Olympic torch relay ahead of the Beijing Games have spread to France's capital, Paris.

Four people were arrested, including two who were taking part in demonstrations critical of Chinese rule in Tibet, AFP news agency said.

Officials twice extinguished the torch and put it on a bus for safety reasons.

Earlier, the president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), Jacques Rogge, expressed concern over unrest in Tibet and the torch protests.

The French protests come after 37 people were arrested during pro-Tibet protests which disrupted Sunday's relay in London.

'Olympic values'

Security in Paris was extremely tight, with some 3,000 police on duty, riding motorcycles, jogging or on skates.

About 500 protesters were reported to be involved in the demonstrations, mainly near the Eiffel Tower.

My brother lives in Shanghai-the local press said that the reception in London was brilliant.  Also, he can't use the word Tibet in a text message or e-mail without it getting pulled.  That prolly says enough.

The title of this thread suggests you think they're wrong to protest. Given the human rights violations being carried out on a daily basis in China I'd say they need to protest more as the message is obviously not getting through.

I was delighted to see the protests in London and Paris.  It won't make any difference but people need to make a point about Tibet and the human rights abuses in China.

I thought it was funny when the Chinese said politics and sport shouldn't be mixed.  If that is the case then why are they hijacking the games for political means?

You could argue that every host country does that.

Whilst I agree that it's a good opportunity to raise the Tibet/China issue I also think if you really want to influence Chinese policy then boycott the products manufactured there. Not that you'd have much left in the shops to choose from if you did but it might do our economy a bit of good in the process.

Avoid, rather than check. Check, rather than hurt. Hurt, rather than maim. Maim, rather than kill. For all life is precious, nor can any be replaced.

If the UK (or any other EU coutry) boycotted Chinese products and services then our economies would be wiped out.  Does every country use the Olympics for poitical reasons? Of course they do.  The first time I remeber it turning into a fiasco was the Moscow Olympics.
