Last time I saw REM was in Ardgillan Castle North County Dublin.  Walking distance from my house and right beside the sea.

(This isn't my house btw - it is Ardgillan Castle)

REM perform Burma protest concert

REM US rock group REM have performed a concert for Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi, which was beamed by satellite into Burma.

Lead singer Michael Stipe dedicated three songs to the activist, who is held under house arrest in the country and recently turned 60.

REM were playing to 25,000 fans at Ireland's Ardgillan Castle.

"We pray with our hearts that by your 61st birthday, you will walk free among your people," said Stipe.

House arrest

"To Aung San Suu Kyi, we are gathered here tonight to join in solidarity with your vision of democracy in Burma," he said, as the concert was beamed to a Burmese radio station run by pro-democracy activists.

Ms Suu Kyi, leader of the National League for Democracy party, was detained most recently after her convoy was attacked while she was on a political tour of northern Burma more than two years ago.

Aung San Suu Kyi She was detained several times before, with her longest period of house arrest from 1989 to 1995, during which time she was awarded the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize.

REM, Sir Paul McCartney, Eric Clapton, U2, Coldplay, Sting and Travis donated songs to an album in aid of the US Campaign for Burma last year.

Irish musician Damien Rice released Unplayed Piano, a song written for Ms Suu Kyi, on Monday.

Last album i bought new of theirs was Monster.  That rocked.

Concurance.

Didn't go down well with your average REM fan though.

still think Green or Document is their finest moment.

Someone get a message through to Captain Snort
That they better start assembling the boys from the fort.
And keep Mrs. Honeyman right out of sight,
'Cos there's gonna be riot down in Trumpton Tonight.
