| slart (25/03/2008) I'd take Euro footy any way it comes. I won't go to the matches though. I don't fancy getting my head caved in by some overenthusiastic continental copper thinking I'm an English hoolie.
Totally agree. Of course it would be nice to qualify the legit way, but given the importance long-term of Euro footie I'd take any way in. We are looking to attract the best players and finally we have the funds to do so, but without any kind of European games we're just not going to be able to sign many of the names we're being linked with.

| I just worry about looking stupid after getting in via the 'back door' and getting beaten by a team we've never heard of.............oh

The difference is this time we have money to spend and a manager who potentially knows how to spend it well. Oh and we have Elano for those horrendous trips to snow-covered Eastern European grounds. Been there, done that.

I'm with you on this one. Doesn't matter how you get there as long as you get there.
Yes, all right.. Christ Almighty! It's like walking down a corridor and answering the door in Nazi Germany! |

| As I understand it:
Fifth is automatic UEFA (almost definitely one of the scouse teams)
Sixth is Intertoto (unless Pompey win the FA Cup and come 6th, in which case the Intertoto spot goes to the 7th place team)
However, this may all be irrelevant for City as we're a shoo in to get in via Fair Play. If England win the UEFA rankings (we were top at Christmas) a UEFA cup place goes to the team top of the Premier League fair play ranking. At the moment we're 6th, but everyone else ahead of us (rags, spurs, arsenal and both scouse teams) have already qualified so the fair play place would go to us (assuming we stay ahead of Wigan in the rankings).
Personally I'd be quite happy with that this year, although next season I'd want it to be via league placing or a cup win. I don't expect we'll get that far anyway with the team still under construction, so really the main thing is just to have some sort of Euro football as a carrot for signing players.

| Anyone else think it's a bit dubious that the top 5 have the best disciplinary records, or are they in the top 5 because of it?
