Qualifying for a major European competition via the Fair Play league is a joke and, like you, i'd rather not.

However, i think that the Intertoto is a legitimate means of qualification. Other European nations take this seriously, this seasons winners included Atletico Madrid, Sampdoria and Hamburg. We would have to play a tie at the end of July which, looking at the quality of teams, would be no harder than a pre season friendly anyway. Then the season would have started proper before the next round. If we qualify for this, i'd have no qualms about entering it.

No, Top 4 Champions League, 5th UEFA, and both cup winners UEFA. The only reason we have more or less always had 6th and sometimes 7th spot getting in UEFA is because when a team wins the cup but are already in Europe via league placing, then it goes to the next place down, and it is a rare occasion when both cups will be won by a team not already in Europe via league placings like this year.

Just to add, I think it was only this season or last that they reduced UEFA places to three instead of four

If that's the case, we could do with Pompey finishing 5th and winning the FA cup as I can't see City finishing 5th now.

3 points on Saturday would have kept us in touch but we fluffed it.......again. Can't see anyone catching Everton now.

If we get our act together and finish the season like we started it we may get 6th spot.

I can see Everton catching Liverpool between now and the end of the season and taking 4th spot.

That'd be good.

Question for ESM. If we DID finish sixth, would you then be happy if we got into UEFA via fair play or intertoto ?

I think seventh is about the best we can hope for  - depending on whether or not we do Portsmouth at home

I'd take Euro footy any way it comes.  I won't go to the matches though.  I don't fancy getting my head caved in by some overenthusiastic continental copper thinking I'm an English hoolie.
