SVEN IN FOR HEN

DAILY STAR SUNDAY
ABOVE: Thierry Henry
16th March 2008

By Steve Millar

SVEN Goran Eriksson has been handed a £100m summer spending kitty – and his top target is Thierry Henry.

The Man City boss is desperate to reach the Champions League and believes Henry – unsettled after his £16m move to Barcelona last year – is the man to lead the Blues into Europe’s elite competition.

Former Arsenal star Henry, 30, is unhappy at being dropped and subbed by Nou Camp boss Frank Rijkaard and is missing his young daughter in London since splitting with his partner.

The French superstar would cost at least £10m but money is no problem with City owned by Thai billionaire Thaksin Shinawatra.

Meanwhile, Eriksson is ready to open talks on a new contract.

“
Mathematically we still have the possibility of qualifying. If it is possible, we will have to fight for it.
”

Eriksson

The Swede has another two years to run on his present deal after taking over last summer.

The Eastlands boss told a City fans’ forum that he was happy at the club and would be looking to stay beyond the next two years.

Eriksson is as disappointed as the faithful that City’s early season push for a Champions League spot has tailed off.

But it’s not lost on City fans that exactly 12 months ago they were fourth bottom in the Premier League with just 30 points on the board and staring relegation in the face.

Eriksson has transformed the club and is still not giving up on playing in Europe next season.

He said: “Mathematically we still have the possibility of qualifying. If it is possible, we will have to fight for it.”

I think certain City "fans" should keep repeating this line to themselves.

But it’s not lost on City fans that exactly 12 months ago they were fourth bottom in the Premier League with just 30 points on the board and staring relegation in the face.

It's a no from me.

I think we should be looking more long term and Tel's best days are in the past besides he still has an ego the size of the Eiffel Tower.

Benjani is only a few months younger, and henry is a proven goal scorer. Lets ave him

That's pretty much my opinion as well. The only reason I can think of in favour of us buying him is that if we got him early in the transfer window it may sway other world class players into signing, but it's hardly the best reason to sign somebody.

Fair point although you could argue he had a negative impact on the youngsters at Arsenal who have improved from his leaving.
