The Ghost Of Gibbi (08/02/2008)
Just been thinking about this, and the only way they can do it is by putting the "neutral" game at the beginning or end of the season. This would mean either extending the season by a week, or adding an extra midweek fixture. The other option I can see is putting the Premiership clubs entry into the FA Cup back to the 4th round, which would really disappoint me.

If it were to happen, the fairest way would be to do it in a "play-off" format. If teams are level on points, scrap goal-difference and they play each other for the next place. Would make relegation and the title race interesting.

And as they said, "the top 5 are seeded", what if City, in 6th, got Arsenal, who won the league, and we were already in Europe after the 38 games. Wouldn't this put us at a disadvantage if it was a close race and Tottenham, in 8th, played Derby. It could potentially put us out of Europe.

So many reasons why it can't/shouldn't work.  The scenario you outline for us could happen to two teams close to relegation-we know how much that is worth.  I just can't see it going through.

The FA, pseudonym the Fuck Abouts. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If we were to be in a position of relegation, and went down due to this dire method, there'd surely be worse repercussions than when Sheffield United sued West Ham!

Pure greed, nothing to do with the good of the game at all.

Someone get a message through to Captain Snort
That they better start assembling the boys from the fort.
And keep Mrs. Honeyman right out of sight,
'Cos there's gonna be riot down in Trumpton Tonight.

If you think of it this way, teams like Wigan will be recieving more revenue, which would mean they'd be in a stronger financial position, it's agreat idea. If you look at it as to effecting the league standings, which every fan is worried about, it's complete horse doo-doo

On the OS

A City spokesperson said: “This is an excellent idea and merits further consideration. Manchester City has a huge international following and we have recently announced a global alliance with six partner clubs from around the world which reflects the growing international interest in our Club and Premier League football.”

Right, if the premier league clubs have unanimously backed the idea then I NEVER EVER want to hear the "we play too many games" line again.  Even if it doesn't go through.  Managers-take it up with your bosses, they clearly don't think we play enough.

Lawrie Sanchez made a good point, other countrie's leagues aren't going to be happy about this, we'll no doubt be cutting into their pie
