So, why did we want to force the price down? If his medical all went well, we are just doing this to save ourselves some cash and screw over Pompey, yes? Am I the only one who thinks this morally wrong and thinks our reputation will suffer because of it? Clubs will think twice about selling us a player in future. Am I missing something? I assume that we negotiated it this way due to his knee injury history, hence it being £X million up front with the rest based on appearances. Well, I hope so, but hardly reason for us to crow about it. You mean we as in the forum or we as in the club? I think fans are happy as it's one over 'arry, petty I know but somewhat satisfying. I mean the forum. I hate 'arry more than anyone, but I can't find much satisfaction in this. Especially as Portsmouth are no doubt secretely delighted they got what they did for him. I don't think they'll be over the moon with it really. Initially wanting £7-9 million, allegedly getting £3.5 million with the rest apprearance based, so in reality we could only end up paying the £3.5 million. This is all rumour of course but for me, if it is true then we got the better end of the deal IMO. I don't doubt we have the better player as I'd not have wanted Defoe and Benjani should suit our style better, but if Portsmouth aren't paying for Defoe til the summer presumably there was no desperate need for them to accept this deal right now. We haven't so much screwed them over as espaped a screwing ourselves. I suppose in City terms that does represent a victory of sorts. I just hope city dont think they've found a new tactic and try it in the next window with another club/player. It may not work next time.

| Seems a totally sensible bit of negotiation and somehting we should always look to do if we suspect a player may not be 100% fit or have a suspected injury. We had doubts over his long term fitness so we put clauses into the payment structure to safeguard ourselves overpaying for a player who can't play. It's a good piece of insurance - if he performs ove the next 30 months , City will be very happy and Pompey will get the cash..........

| Bert Trautmanns neck brace (05/02/2008) The OS says he has joinedWe should be well happy with this. We pay £3.7m for him, he plays rest of this season and next season which will take him up to about 60 games 70 at a push if we get into Europe and we sell him in the summer with 1 year left on his contract for £2-£3m, Pompey don't get anymore fecking money and we get almost all out outlay back. Ali Mack is a genius!

There were issues about a certain knee operation he had a cuple of sesons ago. Apparantly the player should keep a record from the surgeons laying out the procedure, but Benjani was missing the documents that detailed this particular injury.
It is obvious that he is ok, as he has been playing week-in-week-out for Pompey, it was just a case of insurance for ourselves if this particular injury did flare up again. He is at the age where another injury like that would cut-short his career, hence the split payment made it an insurance policy for us...
Hope that explains it!
