So, why did we want to force the price down? If his medical all went well, we are just doing this to save ourselves some cash and screw over Pompey, yes?

Am I the only one who thinks this morally wrong and thinks our reputation will suffer because of it? Clubs will think twice about selling us a player in future.

Am I missing something?

I assume that we negotiated it this way due to his knee injury history, hence it being £X million up front with the rest based on appearances.

Well, I hope so, but hardly reason for us to crow about it.

You mean we as in the forum or we as in the club? I think fans are happy as it's one over 'arry, petty I know but somewhat satisfying.

I mean the forum. I hate 'arry more than anyone, but I can't find much satisfaction in this. Especially as Portsmouth are no doubt secretely delighted they got what they did for him.

I don't think they'll be over the moon with it really. Initially wanting £7-9 million, allegedly getting £3.5 million with the rest apprearance based, so in reality we could only end up paying the £3.5 million. This is all rumour of course but for me, if it is true then we got the better end of the deal IMO.

Avoid, rather than check. Check, rather than hurt. Hurt, rather than maim. Maim, rather than kill. For all life is precious, nor can any be replaced.

MANCHESTER CITY have landed Benjani for nearly half the £8million fee they agreed last week.

They bagged him for just £4.8million three days after the transfer window shut.

City officials told Pompey top brass of their new offer last night — insisting the South Coast club could take it or leave it.

Pompey had to agree as they have a financial commitment to buy Jermain Defoe from Tottenham for £8m.

Eastlands bigwigs were allowed to complete the deal yesterday as the move had been put in motion ahead of last Thursday’s midnight transfer deadline.

They have also given the player a 2½-year deal, rather than the original four-year offer.

City halted the deal after the 29-year-old striker had arrived in Manchester just an hour before the window closed.

Eastlands chiefs were unhappy with some of the paperwork and the fact the medical had been rushed.

Yesterday they gave the striker, who has 12 league goals this season, a full day of tests — which he passed.

They also solved the paperwork problems.

Pompey could not begin talks over Benjani with any other club as the deadline was gone

I don't doubt we have the better player as I'd not have wanted Defoe and Benjani should suit our style better, but if Portsmouth aren't paying for Defoe til the summer presumably there was no desperate need for them to accept this deal right now. We haven't so much screwed them over as espaped a screwing ourselves. I suppose in City terms that does represent a victory of sorts.
