| Still, might deflect a bit of flack from us...Minute's silence for Munich crash | Eight Manchester united players died in the Munich air crash | A minute's silence will be held before England's game with Switzerland on 6 February to mark the 50th anniversary of the Munich air disaster. Eight Manchester United players were among 23 people killed in the crash. The Football Association were worried the silence would not be respected but a spokesman said on Monday: "We believe very strongly this will be respected. "There's a feeling across the country that a minute's silence is the best way to remember everybody who died." | 606: DEBATE |
FA chief executive Brian Barwick has spoken with his United counterpart David Gill and club secretary Ken Ramsden to ensure the club are happy with the plans. Bevington added: "The players will be wearing black armbands and there will be film on both giant screens of the Busby Babes. "There will also be a tribute to the Busby Babes in the match programme. "This was a tragedy for Manchester United in 1958 but we should also recognise there were England players who were lost while representing English football in European competition." The game at Wembley against Switzerland will be new coach Fabio Capello's first game in charge of the England team. Manchester United will mark the anniversary during their match with Manchester City on 10 February where there will be a minute's silence. United will wear a special replica of their 1958 kit on the day, devoid of the players' names or shirt numbers on the back, while City's kit will incorporate a black ribbon with their sponsor's branding removed.

| | United fans are furious that the logo of club sponsor AIG is included in a giant tribute unveiled at Old Trafford. The company's motif and United's badge stand either side of the legend, 'They play on in our memories' at the foot of the moving tribute to the United players who were among 23 victims of the crash. In a joint statement, United fans' groups likened the combination of words and logo to "a cheesy advertising strapline" and demanded its removal. "It appears an attempt to monetise the remembrance of Munich by associating themselves with the powerful emotions generated," they added. But United, who have a £56million deal with AIG, said: "It is entirely appropriate that a partner as closely involved as AIG would want to remember that extraordinary team, cut down in its prime."
Avoid, rather than check. Check, rather than hurt. Hurt, rather than maim. Maim, rather than kill. For all life is precious, nor can any be replaced. |

| I mentioned the picture thing last week. Why a tribute at an england match. There were more Irish and Scottish players killed.

| Bert Trautmanns neck brace (28/01/2008) I mentioned the picture thing last week. Why a tribute at an england match. There were more Irish and Scottish players killed. It's a joke, and proof that the FA always let the tail wag the dog. Given the nature of your average England fan, plus the fact that there will be far more people there who don't understand or even care about the Munich disaster, there's less chance of the minutes silence being observed than there'll be at OT for the derby.

Whilst I do not condone the disrespect of the deaths, I do think that a large porton of the country disrupting the tribute/crocodile tears will show them they're not as loved as they think they are. |
