Republic of Ireland caretaker manager Don Givens has launched an astonishing attack on Stephen Ireland, insisting that his failure to make the squad to face Brazil on February 6 was because of the Manchester City player's lack of commitment to the international cause.

The City midfielder pulled out of the squad for the Republic's match against the Czech Republic in September 2007, citing the death of a grandparent.

Ireland was later to have found out to have lied about the death, to protect his girlfriend, who had miscarried their child.

However, Ireland has not played for his country since, with Givens in particular unhappy about the way the Cobh-born man had dealt with the issue.

“Does he want to play for Ireland. I haven’t spoken to him. Why should I? One of the criteria for playing for Ireland is wanting to pull the green shirt on,” he told Irish radio station Newstalk 106’s Off the Ball programme.

“An awful lot of people would give their right arm to pull on that green shirt. He doesn’t want to.”

Givens went on to state that any negotiation by the FAI to get the midfielder back on board would be 'humiliating'.

“He hasn’t made any contact with me. He knew the situation from the Wales game [where Ireland was left out because of his personal issues]. I am not going to drive up to Manchester to be humiliated by someone like that.

"If he wants to play for his country, it is very easy for him to get in touch. It is not up to me to talk to him. I want commitment from the other side.

“This Association bent over backward for him, the previous manager [Stephen Staunton] flew to Manchester to talk to him, and he turned it down.”

This comment makes my blood boil, guys an idiot.

Too often, we lose sight of lifes simple pleasures. Remember, when someone annoys you it takes 42 muscles in your face to frown, BUT, it only takes 4 muscles to extend your arm and bitch-slap that mother....pass it on.

The guys obviously a twat. Fancy saying Ireland should get in touch with them. Since when did a player ring up and ask to play fro their country. (Think I'll give Fabio a ring now and have a word.) They call you, and if you don't feel you can play for whatever reason, then you turn it down.

“An awful lot of people would give their right arm to pull on that green shirt" Really? Bit difficult to 'pull on a shirt' with only one arm though.

But then Givens always was a wanna-be, who never made it at ManU and only had success at QPR thanks to the quality players around him. Prick.

Why is this coming out now? I think Stevie has put that behind him, and just playing of late.

People just like to stir shit to be honest.

I think Ireland just needs to be left alone really, he will go with the international squad when he feels the time is right. He needs to get his game sorted at City, then push on from there.

Don Givens. I dont know the guy, dont think I've even heard of him. Seems quite the personnel manager though? Spunk eye-brow.

IS there any truth in Ireland's hairpeace being the reason for him not playing for Ireland? I heard he was getting ripped about it constantly and it upset him.

To be honest, if Givens wants to treat probably Ireland's best midfielder that way, then he can go and fuck himself. He's a caretaker boss becuase he's a shite manager, and a prick to boot. He shouldn't burn bridges with him, he's a long term star for Ireland, and if he ostracises Stephen, then he may never pull that Green shirt on, because I honestly think he may never play for Ireland again, and neither I nor he would be too upset about it.
