From the OS. "Manchester City has joined forces with The Royal British Legion in Greater Manchester to support this year’s Poppy Appeal.

The City team will wear a special one-off kit, embroidered with a Poppy emblem, when they play Newcastle United on Saturday. After the match, the shirts will be auctioned off to raise much needed funds for the vital welfare work of the Legion.

Both City, and Oldham Athletic who will also wear a poppy-embroidered shirt, have taken the time and effort to highlight the importance of the Legion’s work in supporting, caring and campaigning for serving and ex-Service people and their families, in Greater Manchester.

Martin Watkins – RBL County Field Officer for Greater Manchester, said: “We are delighted that Manchester City and Oldham Athletic are supporting the Legion’s Poppy Appeal. On behalf of The Royal British Legion I’d like to thank them and all those who give generously to the Appeal. Last year, with the generous support of the public and business community in Greater Manchester, we raised around £600,000 for our welfare work in Greater Manchester.”

City boss Stuart Pearce also backed the support for the British Legion, saying: “All our players will wear these shirts with pride on Saturday.”

Yet again our club does something for the community and others. As long as we keep putting something back our club will remain the people's club. Also a pat on the back to Oldham!

No mention of a certain team from Salford doing anything!

Spot on Tommy and especially good as Radio 5 were on about people saying we shouldn't wear the poppy because "it glorifies war" or some such toss.

Avoid, rather than check. Check, rather than hurt. Hurt, rather than maim. Maim, rather than kill. For all life is precious, nor can any be replaced.

Good to see City leading the way.

On another subject City are the first club in the UK to win an award from the 'Kick racism out of football' bods. We've been given the award for the work the club has done in actively trying to increase support and attendance from ethnic minorities.

Aclub that's not all talk but actually does something! It's things like this which remind me just why I support them.

Our Tommy (10/11/2006)

City boss Stuart Pearce also backed the support for the British Legion, saying: “All our players will wear these shirts with pride on Saturday.”

That'll make a nice change...

Seriously though, all credit to the club for doing this.  It's good that the club always seems to be at the forefront when these kind of things are mentioned.

Whether it's a bit of publicity spin on the clubs behalf, it still sends out the right message doesn't it. You can guarantee that MOTD will make a comment on it on Saturday night, as will Sky...........shortly before talking about the Toons amazing return to form........and the double hattrick.

Very commendable, i have been wearing mine all week.

I do think though that city are sometimes too charitable, for a club in the financial state we are in we do seem to spend a lot of money in the community and on other projects that you do not see from many other clubs. It is indeed why we are proud to be city fans but it makes you wonder how the finances are allocated.

A footnote to this - if there is anyone from the club looking at this thread stop sending 2 text messages to advertise match tickets, surely this will save you money.

The clubs work in the community raises the profile of the club at grass roots level. Alex Williams and his team are doing a fantastic job, and I'm sure they are helping with getting the kids interested in City.

I know i have met alex williams on several occasions, i was not saying that the work they do is a waste of time, i was pointing out the amount of money that is allocated for this work compared to other clubs seems a lot.

I am afraid to say as well that kids are more likely to be impressed by a winning team on the pitch rather than any community work we do with them. The biggest influence in kids lives at the moment is tv and unfortunately at the moment we are not covering ourselves in glory on the pitch.

I have been wearing a poppy all week - and was very upset when my kids told me that they weren't for sale at their schools

nice to see City reminding me why they are my club - and not some soul less conglomerate
