Sven to hijack £18m striker deal

Sven Goran Eriksson is set to battle it out with Sir Alex Ferguson for Dutch protege Klaas Jan Huntelaar.
Both Manchester City and Manchester United have been watching the Ajax forward, nicknamed 'The Hunter,' since summer, along with Chelsea, Arsenal and Newcastle.

They are hopeful that the Dutch club's poor financial state will mean they can sign the 6ft 1in striker for a knockdown £12million, even though Ajax value him at £18m, according to the News of the World.

And the Swede is hopeful of persuading the former PSV star to move to City instead of United on a promise of a regular starting place.

Huntelaar, 24, has scored a stunning 53 goals in 65 games and has been likened to Dutch legend Marco van Basten.

YES PLEASE

Would be great but Utd may really push for this with Saha apparently out for rest of season. You'd hope being a sub to the beautiful Rooney and Tevez would not be the greatest incentive for any player with desire to play football - he'd be straight into the City team.

Also just don't believe the press speculation, we've been linked with every semi-available decent striker (and some not so decent). Will believe only when I see a picture of a player in a City shirt. Starting to wonder how much money is actually available to Sven but we really need a player like this (stating the obvious).

I can't help thinking that we need a quality midfielder such as an Ali Bernarbia at his best! Strikers are only as good as the service they get & although I don't rate Vassell at all, we have Bianchi and the returning Bojinov. Yesterday against Everton showed that if you cut off supply to Elano & Petrov we struggle bigtime & thats why I think a Bernarbia type player could create openings and thread a killer pass that splits the opposition defence!

Whilst I think Huntelaar would be a great signing the question is will Sven have money still left for a really creative midfielder? I doubt it!

You'd think that between them, Elano, petrov and Castillo will create the chances. The problem is, it's very difficult to create chances for an immobile striker (bianchi). The only goals Bianchi will ever score are tap ins. The goals he scored in Italy last year were basically scrappy tap ins. Other than last season he hasn't really hit the back of the net at any level.

Anelka would have been perfect....his off the ball movement is superb. Vassell's movement is good but it's always into the wrong areas so he always ends up with the ball in a position where he isn't really a threat. I still think Vassell is important to the team tho, mainly for his versatility and work rate.

Pesronally if there isn't anybody suitable available, we should wait until the summer.

Huntelaar for £18m is a huge risk. He's good but i'm not sure he's the sort of striker we need.

That kind of goalscoring record is similar to Ruud van Horseman, and we saw what a goalscorer he became over here...if we could get him, then splendid, but i doubt it.

So was Mateja Kezman's.

Thing is Afonso Alves has an even better goalscoring record whilst playing for a shitter team, who i presume create less chances. And he's cheaper! Why not go for him instead. Makes more sense to me.

The thing is, we already have a goalscorer - Bianchi.  Scored 18 goals in Serie A last season, for a struggling side, Reggina.  What more do we need.

Have a look on youtube at some of the goals Bianchi scored last season, if he gets the service he can do that for us.

But there in lies our problem. Zero efforts on target in the last 180 minutes of league footy surely isn't totally down to our current strikers being bobbins. We need to give them the service first to at least have half a chance.
