| | Is it just me, or are there a few clubs suffering after giving a manager the job based on 9 or 10 games as caretaker, rather than sustained success at a team in the league below? There's us, Fulham, Newcastle, Boro (well that wasn't even based on results), even Iain Dowie seems to be still surviving on that half season where he got Palace promoted. Meanwhile, teams like everton, blackburn and West Ham (give them time - last season was good) pick young managers who've proven themselves a bit, and seem to do better. Does a run of decent results with players desperate to prove themselves to a new manager, really put you ahead of someone who's build a decent team over a few years in the Championship? |

| | Fulham are struggling are they? Well, if you say so! And Southgate was never a caretaker at Boro. But to answer your point i don't think managers just get picked on that basis. Especially in our case, Pearce was the fans choice...the board couldn't have not appointed him because there would have been an outrage!

| fatsquid (05/11/2006) Fulham are struggling are they? Well, if you say so!
When you consider the team they've had, I don't think they've done particularly well. But maybe it was a bit harsh on them. On the whole though, I can't think of an example of appointing a first time manager, and it being really successful. Okay Fulham might not have been fighting relegation every season, but they've hardly been fighting for Europe.
Though I've got to say, I think that appointment of a novice manager does seem to go hand in hand with deciding not to spend any more money. They'll point out the fact that Curbishley or Allardyce have managed success without spending money, forgetting that they've had quite a lot of years to build a team.
So okay then, here's a question. Do you think Pearce if given the current level of spending for the next five years, could build a squad capable of regularly fighting for European places? Even if it meant that we had a few seasons in the bottom half, like Charlton and Bolton had? Even if it meant being forced to sell some of our academy products who weren't patient enough to wait for success? And how do we know that progress is being made? Because Villa spent ages in a similar position, but evidently without any progress being made.
Sorry, this is just my depressed posting because we lost this weekend. I'll be pleased if we win at home next week at the City of Manchester Fortress. |
