There's plenty of rose tinted glasses worn on here when it comes to our national team.

We are not good enough, if we were, this debate wouldn't be taking place. Whether it's individual players, lack of strength in depth, tactics or management, we have flattered to deceive for years.

IMO, it really all started in 1990 when we came so close led by Sir Bob, the housewives favourite leading the line up front, Gazza crying, a manager that everyone loved who was knighted for the failure to lift the cup, rather than torn to pieces by the press like Sven et al.

Since then we seem to have adopted the opinion that it's only a matter of time before we win, expectations are sky high before every tournament, pressure heaped onto everyone involved. IMO our current squad isn't as good as the squad in 1990, yet we expect more.

I agree with that.  I don't think we're as bad as others may, but I also don't think (and it's a popular opinion) that we have a divine right to win tournaments.  Our expectations in general are too high. I dunno, should we expect to be the best tea in the world?

Edit-typo with tea,  but I think I'll leave it...

Benny:

That post was getting far too long.

Right, we have a problem with the lack of natural skill.  You can still get a team to play to a system that gets good results though, a bit like Wimbledon, Leicester, Nott'm Forest etc.  For that you need a great tactical manager like O'Neill, (Clough was the best), Scolari or Mourinho.

Even the Greeks who played a great tactical game, and the players didn't equal the sum of the parts - but even the Greek players were good ball controllers - they all played their club football in countries where the game was slower and control better.

So, if we could get Mourinho in, he would play to a system, and not always pick the biggest names, but get a side to play for him.  The FA were on the right lines trying to get Scolari, but of course he bailed out when he saw our press.

Someone get a message through to Captain Snort
That they better start assembling the boys from the fort.
And keep Mrs. Honeyman right out of sight,
'Cos there's gonna be riot down in Trumpton Tonight.

I think I agree with everything you said there, so maybe we have the same opinion.  As I said, I think Maclaren was a joke and I think if we get a very good manager in we'll get quite a bit better.

There are other fundamental issues that need addressing too. I'm just hopeful we'll get a good manager and things will then look better.

Our players could be good enough, in a tactically run, well organized side - by a tactically astute manager - which Maclaren was obviously not.
