Shimmer's right - our first choice XI is good enough to compete with any team in the world.

OK. We'll just put the last 41 years down to a bit of bad luck. Sorted.

you can be good enough to compete.. that doesnt mean you'll win.. argentina were by far the most talented team at last year's world cup.

and we havent been good enough every tournament for the last 41 years.. but in the last few we've had a chance.

Cool Cool Coolio...

Shimmer's right - our first choice XI is good enough to compete with any team in the world.

I disagree.

goalkeeper situation.  We do not have a top keeper.

centre back John terry & ? - for me we have a perfectly good centre back in Jon Woodgate but he never gets a game.

Ashley Cole - cannot defend.  Appalling.

Lampard - his way of playing for Chelsea doesn't work for England.

SWP - not good enough control at this level

Beckham - past it now.

Joe Cole - nice footballer, needs to be involved more.

Crouch - tries really hard, and is possibly this teams best player.

Owen - can't rely on him, always injured.

we have a top quality goalkeeper in david james.. but he has been ridiculed in the press....

*ashley cole is a top quality left back, possibly the best in the world.. but he has been ridiculed in the press....

**lampard and gerrard have always done well together until later in tournaments.. but the press started a campaign saying they cant play together

SWP - was the only player causing problems in the first half yesterday and is our most direct player, there are diff types of players, ***great control isnt everything. the press though decided they wanted becks back

****beckham - the press demanded he was out

do you see a theme here?

*Don't make me laugh - he's usually the stem of our problems, giving the ball away in the left back area.

**they can't.  Neither of them is a naturally holding player.

***great control means you are a better player, poor control means it takes you too long and time is wasted.

****i do agree with that.

* cole does bomb forward, but what he is great at is usuing his pace to cover behind the centre backs when someone gets through... watch next time they play. i presume you do watch and not just read the Sun in the morning?

** 90% of england games are played against teams that will sit back, so why do we need a holding midfielder? it's a waste of a player.

*** SWP can kick the ball past the player and run onto it, he has competent control, there are many different styles of footballers, having a good first touch isnt everything.

**** becks should have not been an "untouchable" player, but mclaren sacking him off completely prob thinking this would please the media and fans..again points to the media's influence on the team being a major prob.

The Sun??? do me a favour. I prefer to read a paper that at least spells things correctly.   Watch Cole, and watch how many times he gets caught out of position, watch how many times his stray passes from the left back area.

Play with a holding player in every game, the more you play, the more you get used to it - not just panicking in the big games.

Having a good first touch gives you the upper hand on an opponent that doesn't - that's why most of the teams we play have the upper hand on us.

Someone get a message through to Captain Snort
That they better start assembling the boys from the fort.
And keep Mrs. Honeyman right out of sight,
'Cos there's gonna be riot down in Trumpton Tonight.

read the sun.. your comments on here look like theyve been copy and pasted from the website!

you should play the team youre up against, having a holding midfielder sat in front of the defence in a game when you have 70% possesion is pointless, what will they learn?

i dont think we wil agree on cole, but personally, i dont see a better left back in any of the better teams.

and since when do most other teams have an upper hand on us? a comment on the technique of english players is a long standing issue, not just based on the last 120 mins of football. we were ranked 4th in the world 2 years ago, because we were winning 95% of games comfortably... in the later stages of any tournament, games can go either way. italy werent the best team at the last world cup, greece werent the best at the euros before that. in previous tournaments weve breezed the qualifiers in groups a lot harder than this one and either gone out on penalites to strong teams or lost to the eventual winners.

Cool Cool Coolio...

I can honestly say that i have not even picked up a copy of the Sun for at least 10 years - i have seen it in the past, and that's the reason i wouldn't read it.

We're not that bad.  I think Maclaren's management was a joke, and I believe if we get a decent manager in we'll be ok again.  Also, the U21 side is pretty good so I think it's not all doom and gloom.  Yes, it was a shocking result, and I'm furious, but we don't need to panic too much...
