Just read this on the beeb-excellent quote...

"The under-whelming, expensive, spin-driven reign of a man promoted out of his depth"

Hands up if that applies to you and your job!!

the thing that scare me shitless is the lack of strength in depth for a national side - we need two or three quality players in each position - we don't have them

you're talking about england squad and you say you need two or three quality players? your only problem is you don't have a leader and for me that should be gerrard. thus, instead of lampard hargreaves should cover and i definitely don't think you need any players. you already have bunch of quality players

The only true quality player England have is John Terry, who does what it says on the tin as a centre back. Micah could become one, but still way off.

Michael Owen is our best goalscorer but he's always injured.

Bent, Robinson, Carson, Bridge, Ashley Cole, Lescott, Lampard all good Premiership players but not internationally.

gerrard is one of the best mf's in the world. rooney is really classy even hes a rag

edit: also beckham

Why is it, do you think, that we aren't world beaters?

Lack of pride and passion.

Money.

That's just populist bullshit IMO.

Pride and passion don't win you football matches.  As for money, I assume you mean players' salaries?  Like they're not motivated because they're rich?  Bollocks.

We were a point off going through at the end of the day.  A couple of better decisions by the manager before and during key matches and we could have won the group.  Fair enough we don't have world class players all over the pitch, but how many teams do?  We've enough decent players, we just need them moulding into a winning team.  That takes a decent manager.  Whether we ever get one remains to be seen.

Rooney's control a lot of the time is piss poor.  yes, he scores some great goals but his control is pretty rubbish to be honest.

Gerrard, full of determination, grit etc, but needs skilfull players around him - not to keep hoofing the ball 8 foot in the air to Crouch.

if we had quality players like Elano, Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Robben etc...players with good skill, then Gerrard could feed those players - Gerrard has got a great engine on him, to get up and down the pitch, but he needs to be able to give the ball to good creative players.

Years ago playing for Nott's forest, at half time Martin O'Neill said to Brian Clough, "boss, i keep running up and down the pitch but they don't pass the ball to me."

Clough "You carry on doing what you're doing Martin, i tell them to give the ball to John Robertson...because he's a better footballer than you."

Shimmer's right - our first choice XI is good enough to compete with any team in the world.

i think the england players are good enough... there's a mentality where if the person playing in a certain position isnt "world class" the it's a massive problem position. but look at other top teams, there are players in the argie or italian team that are relatively unknown, but fit into the team.

but it's stupid to say we dont have good enough quality players.. if you were to pick your dream team from all the players in our group, maybe youd have corluka, eduardo, modric, benayoun... the rest would prob be english.

gerrard is a rubbish captain.. he can only lead by example, he keeps his head down and doesnt communicate. compare pictures of him to terry after their teams concedes a goal, terry will be shouting whereas gerrard will be looking at his feet.

the problem is the pressure, at club level they are world beaters and looked at as heros.. whereas at international level they are either doing what is expected or going to be ridiculed.

Cool Cool Coolio...

i agree with roy keane. he says there are too big egos in the squad. lampard and gerrard can definitely not will work out together. and beckham and joe cole are also added. i havent watched the match yesterday but im sure england lost lots of ball in the mf and im assuming there was only swp who was running forward to get ball. lampard, gerrard, joe cole they're all playmakers. they always want to take the ball into their feet

I'm inclined to agree.  We may not be world champion quality, but we're not a hopeless team, and a good manager would get decent results imo.

Shimmer's right - our first choice XI is good enough to compete with any team in the world.

I disagree.

goalkeeper situation.  We do not have a top keeper.

centre back John terry & ? - for me we have a perfectly good centre back in Jon Woodgate but he never gets a game.

Ashley Cole - cannot defend.  Appalling.

Lampard - his way of playing for Chelsea doesn't work
