SP would give the job a bit of passion and grit, but that's about it really. I think there are managers out there that have more strings to their bow and would do a better job.

I hope the red tops are happy with their 'we want an English manager' campaigns last year. They got what they wanted and look what's happened.

If the FA hadn't made such a total balls up of the big Phil appointment, maybe this would never have happened.

My tip for the hot seat - Jose.

He has also just been linked to the Australia head coach after Advocaat (sp?) did a last minute about face.

Not sure he's the best we could get, but I suspect the FA will panic and want to appoint a fan/media pleaser.

Should get a thread up here about who is best for the role but I think you have to look to a foreigner here as I cant think of a English national that can turn this team in to a world class unit.

Do it!

I think we've also got to wake up and realise that we are not good enough to be world beaters.

This is true, but then again you don't have to be. Greece won it last time around.

Why is it, do you think, that we aren't world beaters?

Because we haven't got footballers that are good enough.

We have.  But the English bread and butter is playing it 4-4-2 (or 4-4-1-1), that bank of two rows of four is the platform for all succesful English sides.  We've tried continental formations and it's failed. Forum fact.  I think Sven has been vindicated by his choice of formation when he was England boss by selecting a formation the players had at his disposal.  All English, all schooled in 4-4-2.  Look at how he has City set up at the moment, the players he has suit that formation.

I don't think we have enough good players, and those that we consider to be good would probably not be rated so highly abroad. Croatia are not the best team in Europe, but they were a class above us last night. There is something seriously wrong with football in this country. We cannot produce any decent coaches and we don't produce enough decent players. Blaming the manager and the FA isn't enough. People need to stop sticking their heads in the sand else we'll never change owt. Personally I don't think this is the worst it's gonna get. Be prepared for a WC2010 with no England either.

You could be right on that one.

Someone get a message through to Captain Snort
That they better start assembling the boys from the fort.
And keep Mrs. Honeyman right out of sight,
'Cos there's gonna be riot down in Trumpton Tonight.

It's got nothing to do with systems, if your players can't trap the ball and pass it to a team mate then you can't win football matches.

Agreed Bassy, as I said above, nearly all the players on the park last night play in 4-5-1 formations at club level. Croatia's first two goals last night had nothing to do with our formation, we had 4 at the back and a keeper, all 5 were to blame last night, and TBH they could have scored more. I though Micah was fucking shite defensively.

We aren't good enough, even with a fully fit squad to choose from we will not lift silverware, I'm not saying we're far off being good enough, but we're not yet.

There's two questions we should ask Fabio Capello after he has said that he would be interested

'How much do you want?'

'When can you start?'

...and can you make silk purses?

Sometimes I wish that I could stop you from talking when I hear the silly things that you say

We are oceans away from winning anything.  Look at the recent tournaments exits.  Accepted that we have English grit and brawn that gets us so far...usually.  When it comes to the crunch, and we have to play really good sides we can't compete.

Last night - Croatia - passed us off the park, we concede early then play panic, route one football - their defence soaks it up.  We can't defend.

2006 - Portugal.  They passed the ball round us all afternoon, then we blamed Ronaldo for our undoing. Forgetting the fact that Rooney deserved to be sent off.

2004 - Portugal.  Penalties admittedly (another curious English problem), we huffed and puffed and drew 2-2.  They still passed better than us.

2002 - Brazil - Outplayed us with 10 men.  We never had a shot on goal for about an hour against 10 men - they kept the ball.

2000 - Romania - same as last night really.  Looked like getting a draw, then lost - rubbish defending.  Again on the ball the Romanians far more comfortable on the ball.

the thing that scare me shitless is the lack of strength in depth for a national side  - we need two or three  quality players in each position - we don't have them

you're talking about england squad and you say you need two or three quality players? your only problem is you don't have a leader and for me that should be gerrard. thus, instead of lampard hargreaves should cover and i definitely don't think you need any players. you already have bunch of quality players
