| Chairman apologises to the fans 23/10/2006 12:46
Manchester City Chairman John Wardle says he was embarrassed by the Blues mauling at Wigan on Saturday and wants the players to ‘take a long look at themselves’ after the 4-0 defeat.
Mr Wardle told mcfc.co.uk: “I was at the game and could fully understand the reaction of our supporters who were there. I can also appreciate why some of them left early and I shared their anger.
“I want the players to take a long look at themselves this week. They must understand that the performance was unacceptable.
“As Chairman of the football club, I sat with the Board of Directors and man for man we were totally embarrassed by what happened on the pitch.
“This football club is not used to this type of performance and will not accept it. We are determined to put this right.”
Mr Wardle added that the club is examining options in the forthcoming transfer window to further strengthen the squad and he was open to any new investment in Manchester City.
“As a major shareholder of this football club, I would be the last person to stand in the way of anyone who wished to come in with investment to move the club forward.
“We will support the manager in the January transfer window. We have already invested a net £8.5m in players this year and we will continue to look for opportunities to improve the squad.
“Our supporters have always been tremendously loyal and I thank them for that. We must now all pull together and get behind the team in the coming weeks and months.”

Well said, very nice of him to do that. But it is the players who should apologise, and the only one who might do that is Dunnie. He also forgot to mention that Pearce should be taking a long hard look at himself

| | ok, first impressions whenever the chairman blames the team - he is inadvertantly blaming the manager if he thinks investing 8.5 million pounds is enough to survive he is having a fucking laugh - everton spent that on one player there are plenty of people wanting to invest in clubs a lot smaller and with less 'potential' than us - where are they when City is discussed ? Running the other fecking way - thats where we're not being told the whole story by as long shot

| But if you take away the £6mil for Samaras he has paid £2.5 mil and what you get is £2.5mill worth of players for that amount of money, and that is just not good enough for this league.

| | Yes...but it isn't Pearce's fault they had no passion is it? Ok he has a responseability to motivate his players, but what is a player doing in the premiership he isn't already 110% motivated? Fair enough Pearce has to take a lot of stick, but there is a lot that is out of the managers control as well. Wardle has blasted the players, not the manager...maybe his criticism for Pearce will take place in a private meeting...but this isn't an attack on the manager at all IMO

| SP is playing the same game, by praising the fans' passion and commitment - is this just a ploy to appease us and try to deflect some of the criticism, or is it genuine do you think?Stuart Pearce has reflected further on Saturday’s 4-0 defeat at the hands of Wigan Athletic and asked his players to show the same passion and commitment as the Club’s fans. “It’s down to me to say to the players ‘you’ve got to match the passion that the supporters have got at this football club.’ “There’s no hiding place and no shirking place for us as a management team or as players. The players and myself have got to match the passion that the fans show with their support for the Club – that’s where it starts – it’s not for me to say to the fans.” Of the fans Pearce added: “I know they’re performances are consistent but what I have to make sure is that my players are more consistent. “The fans have always backed this football club from start to finish, I probably would have said the same thing if I was sat in their seats, but that’s not my job to say that. It’s my job to lift the spirits of a team and win the next game.” Responding to some stiff questions after the game where the Manager appeared to be his usual calm self, he stated: “I’m a passionate man, been involved in the game a long time, I’m acutely aware of the criticism that comes with a performance that isn’t good enough – I take that on the chin. “If you’re saying ‘do I enjoy getting beaten 4-0?’ I think you know the answer before you’ve even asked the question. “If you want me to run up and down and scream and pull my head out in front of the media – that won’t happen. “The players will know exactly what will be expected of them come the next match.”

| | Is Pearce the right person to be allowed to invest even more money come January?? His record in the transfer market thus far looks ok on paper, but shite in practice. Vassell - Good player, not an out and out goal scorer, injury prone. Cole - Two faced tag twat. Samaras - We'll never know if SP keeps playing him as a fucking left winger. Dabo - Wank. Hamann - Equally as wank. Mathew Mills - One for the future, (again!!). Corradi - Early candidate for the PL's worst striker of the season? Dickov - Why? Isaksson - Who? Beasley - Who?
