If he changes the team from Saturday he needs a good hard slap

Only I pick team, warns McClaren after Owen plea

Steve McClaren is prepared to change the victorious England line-up that fared so well against Israel for Wednesday's visit of Russia, though the head coach has insisted that he will not be swayed in his decision as to who partners Michael Owen up front by any preferences expressed by his senior players.

England strengthened their chances of qualifying from Group E with a convincing 3-0 dismissal of the Israelis at Wembley on Saturday and are confident they will have Owen Hargreaves back from a thigh injury against Russia. However, it is up front where McClaren appears to face an awkward decision following Emile Heskey's impressive display on his first appearance for the national team for 39 months, with Peter Crouch back in contention after suspension.

There had been suggestions that Owen would favour playing alongside Heskey, with whom he has proved prolific for England and enjoyed a productive spell in the Liverpool team. Yet McClaren, who does not anticipate having Frank Lampard available this week as he continues his rehabilitation from a thigh injury, will not be seeking the senior striker's opinion ahead of finalising his selection.

"It's a tough decision, but I pick the team," insisted the coach after Saturday's win. "It will be dictated by what I think. It will have nothing to do with other players and their opinions. It would count, but I would not discuss that with the player. I would know that from the performance of the player. Michael has played well with Peter Crouch and with Emile Heskey."

Owen, who scored his 38th international goal just after half-time on Saturday, combined well with Heskey against Israel. "I know Emile like the back of my hand so we were never worried about whether we would click going into the game," he said. "Emile is Emile. You know what you're going to get from him and he can be a real weapon in certain games. He was unplayable in some of the games I was alongside him for Liverpool, so it doesn't surprise me that he did so well against Israel."

Yet, while Owen has thrived alongside the Wigan Athletic forward - Saturday's goal was his 12th in 13 England games alongside him - it should not be forgotten that Crouch and Owen have scored 10 goals in six starts together for their country. Russia are unlikely to prove as accommodating as Israel, with Guus Hiddink's side having conceded only once in the group to date. Their Dutch coach was quick to insist yesterday that he still anticipates Russia joining Croatia in emerging from the group in November.

"Croatia are a tough team, England are coming up and we are still in transition, but qualification is between these three teams," said Hiddink. "I wouldn't be very good if I didn't say that Russia would be among the two that qualify. I don't mind who the other one is, but Croatia are in the lead, are very experienced and they don't spill many points."

England will need to claim all three on Wednesday, wary as they are of next month's match in Moscow, on an artificial pitch. McClaren is keen to have Hargreaves' experience back for the first tie between the countries, the Manchester United midfielder having failed a fitness test on a thigh strain on Saturday.

Hargreaves will be assessed at training in London Colney today, and early indications are optimistic. "We are hoping Owen will be OK," said the coach when asked whether the side would be changed for the visit of Hiddink's side. "But it is a valid question. We will have a look at the video. It may not be the same team."

That will affect Gareth Barry. The Aston Villa player earned his 11th cap on Saturday and excelled alongside Steven Gerrard in central midfield, though he accepts he may now lose out to a more experienced head. "Hopefully I've given the coach something to think about," he said. "It's another option for him, though, isn't it? All you can do is put your name in the frame and do as well as you can, if selected."

Regardless, there is a refreshing realism within the England set-up that demands a productive result against Russia. "We've done nothing," added McClaren. "We have put ourselves into a position. There's no time for celebration. We need to follow this up on Wednesday. It is always winning after winning that is the most difficult."

Steve McClaren is ready to drop Gareth Barry and Emile Heskey for Wednesday's Euro 2008 qualifier against Russia. (Daily Mirror)

If he does this, he is an Idiot.

I thought Barry was excellent as well, if McClown drops him for Lumpard or Hargreeves, then he deserves all he gets. Barry showed that he complements Gerrard in Midfield, and its not about having lots of stars, but a team that works together.

Barry set two goals up FFS, McClown you Idiot and Heskey was a menace that created more space for Owen to run into and explore.

I cant understand why you would change any team that won 3-0 and looked in complete control all game !!

apart from the chelsea players.. the team on the pitch on saturday were from a wide spread of clubs. they showed they can play well on the international stage without champions league experience. israel are not a bad team at all and they were totally outclassed. i think they should be rewarded with the same team, let the likes of lampard, neville, crouch, hargreaves wait for their chance.

also someone was saying we have never lost in 90 mins with hargreaves in the team so he must play, 12 games, 6 wins, 6 loses. is only winning half the games success for england?

Cool Cool Coolio...

England boosted by Barry factor
Gareth Barry in action for England against Israel

Live coverage on BBC One, BBC Radio 5live & the BBC Sport website

Steven Gerrard believes his close friendship with Gareth Barry helped them combine successfully in the centre of England's midfield.

The two midfielders linked superbly against Israel on Saturday and could play together against Russia.

"I'm not sure whether everybody knows what good friends we are off the pitch," Gerrard told BBC Sport.

"The communication was there, we weren't strangers and that was the key to the partnership working."

Frank Lampard is a major doubt for Wednesday's Euro 2008 qualifier against Russia at Wembley, although Owen Hargreaves is thought to have a good chance of recovering from his thigh injury.

And Gerrard, who has been passed fit to play on Wednesday after playing with a fractured toe against Israel, explained what he thought made a successful midfield partnership.

Emile Heskey does a lot of hard work that goes unnoticed

Steven Gerrard

"Balance is about working hard for each other - when one midfielder attacks, one defends," he added.

"You can go on for weeks about formations but it is important that with whatever formation you go with, you have the right flexibility and the right personnel."

Gerrard paid tribute to the qualities of Emile Heskey, who impressed in Saturday's 3-0 win over Israel but will vie for a start with Liverpool striker Peter Crouch, who is available after a suspension.

"I know him inside out and Emile is a player's player," said the Liverpool midfielder.

"You appreciate what he contributes when you're on the pitch. He does a lot of hard work that goes unnoticed."

Gerrard added: "He caused Israel a lot of problems. I thought we picked up lots of little bits of possession off him against Israel, he put in a positive performance.

We realise Russia is going to be a tougher test so we need to forget about Israel now

Steven Gerrard

"I do enjoy playing with a target man, as a midfielder you can get knock downs and stuff."

Gerrard added that England will have to build on Saturday's display when they face Russia.

The Russians are second in Group E, one point ahead of England, after a 3-0 win over Macedonia on Saturday.

Group leaders Croatia remain two points ahead of Russia after beating Estonia 2-0 - and they will be confident of another three points on Wednesday when they travel to bottom side Andorra.

"We were positive about Saturday's performance but the important thing is not to get carried away," stated Gerrard.

"We realise Russia is going to be a tougher test so we need to forget about Israel now. But we can take the positives from that game and build on it and hopefully get the same outcome."

Meanwhile, Shaun Wright-Phillips, man-of-the-match against Israel, played down his impressive start to the season after a difficult phase of his career following his £21m move to Chelsea in July 2005.

Wright-Phillips struggled for regular first-team football after his move to Stamford Brige but has been a regular for club and country this season.

"I never worried about my situation - it is more about the team. As long as we have a good team spirit and a good combination of players in the team then I am happy," said Wright-Phillips.

"I am not really a negative thinker - I always try to think positive.

"The main thing is that everybody, my family and friends, my dad, they all had the belief in me. That was the key factor."

Blackburn midfielder David Bentley was booed on Saturday when he came on for the last seven minutes to make his full England debut.

Bentley pulled out of the England Under-21 squad for the European Championship in the summer citing tiredness and McClaren excluded him from the squad to play Germany in a friendly last month.

But Under-21 coach Stuart Pearce believes Bentley will win over the England supporters.

"He deserved to be in the squad after his performances for his club this season and last season and the games he played for the Under-21s," Pearce told BBC Radio 5live.

"I don't think people will be on his back now. Some people had a little point of dissatisfaction to make on Saturday.

"But come Wednesday, if he gets on that pitch he'll be supported like anyone wearing the England shirt."

Agreed, and do you think this is a dig at Lumpard?

"Balance is about working hard for each other - when one midfielder attacks, one defends," he added.
