So apparently McLaren has twice begged Scholes to return to the England team. Surely the manager of an International team has got better things to do than be on his knees in front of a has-been rag.

I always knew McLaren was going to bring his ragness to England at that we'd have to put up with more years of Neville agony, but begging old players who don;t want to play is just a joke.

From the BBC:

England manager Steve McClaren has revealed he has twice asked Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes to come out of international retirement.
Scholes quit the international scene in 2004 but McClaren wants the 31-year-old to change his mind.

"I asked in the summer and he declined and he declined again last week," he told BBC Five Live's Sportsweek.

"I don't expect to be asking him again but the door is always open and I would never close it on Paul Scholes."

Red or not, Scholes was a class player.  One of the few Reds you wished had been blue.

Given England's performance without him in the World Cup , seems entirely reasonable that Maclaren should enquire as to his availability, I doubt he would have been first choice but his attitude might have helped in the squad.

I have serious concerns that United and ex United players get favourable treatment (i.e. the Nevilles, Wes Brown and Foster who ever he is) but to put Scholes in the same category seems a bit harsh......

I agree Scholes was a good player, but coming back from injury at 31 years old, it seems ridiculous given Englands central midfield options that Scholes would figure in anyones plans unless as a bench filler in case of emergencies.

I'd sooner see Joey in there than Scholes. We're working towards the European champs in 2 years time and the World Cup in 4 years time when Scholes will be 35. Doesn't make sense to me that he would be up for it then.

Agreed, Scholes was probably the best midfielder in the world in his prime, and he still has a job to do. I would be satisfied if he was brought back into the squad...just  sensible business from McClaren.

Spot on. An international campaign lasts two years. Whats the point in bringing someone back when they are highly unlikely to feature in two years time, especially when we already can't play Gerrard in his proper position thanks to fat Frank. You should be phasing out the older players at the start of each qualifying campaign, not bringing them back in.

Sometimes I wish that I could stop you from talking when I hear the silly things that you say
