A while back there was talk of a breakaway league set up by the G14 (or whatever they call themselves) and this started widespread panic about the Premiership and football in England in general.

However, I reckon it's time has come and I would welcome it. The fact is that the Prem has now become a farce with the main interest lying in who goes down rather than who will win it. There's moderate interest in the 3rd and 4th Champions League spots but we pretty much know that the probability is that the top four every year will consist of Chelsea, Scum, Liverpool and Arsenal.

So, why not let these clubs piss off to a European League and play with their buddies from Italy, Spain, France, Holland and Germany week in and week out and let the rest of us get on with a meaningful competition at home? It would serve a lot of their bandwagon jumping fans right if it did happen too.

Agreed in theory Cloudy, it would promote a more competitive league for us 'midtable teams'.  Though winning the league without the top 4 would lose a lot of it's prestige don't you think?

Was going to say the same thing.  Any success after those teams left would be slightly cheapened, and you just know that rags fans in particular would love to trot out the old 'only won it because we weren't in it' line (to whichever club wins it, not just City!).  Like everyone else, I have dreams of us becoming a top team, but I'd rather do it on our own merits - even if it takes years of slow but steady progress - than on the basis of the best teams no longer competing.  That is probably (well OK, more than that!) wishful thinking, but if this does happen, I'll always be left wondering how we would have done had those teams still been in the Premiership.

See, this is what I dont understand. If this had happened 10 years ago, it would never have included Chelsea and who is to say in 10 more years that the current top 4 are still the top four and not be someone like west ham or Villa, as unlikely as it seems now, you never know.

Take Scotland as well, Rangers are 17 points behind Celtic, does that mean that they are no longer invited to the big party?

Would these teams change overtime or seasons? I dont see how it could work to be honest.

The truth is that the finances have shifted so significantly now that the domination of the "big four" is unlikely to change for decades. Maybe one or two will have a nibble like Leeds did so memorably but I can't see any major change.

The beauty of letting them bugger off is that the fact they want to do this shows how little they understand about the fans of their own clubs. The truth is that a Euro-League would wither on the vine imo.

Now that bit would be funny, especially if they tried crawling back, cap in hand!
