JOEY BARTON has urged England boss Steve McClaren to DROP Steve Gerrard or Frank Lampard and let him do their dirty work.

The Manchester City ace has already blasted England’s pampered superstars for their rash of post-World Cup books.

Now Barton, who McClaren has hinted could be called up for February’s friendly with Spain, says the midfield duo of Gerrard and Lampard does not work.

And 24-year-old Scouser Barton said: “I’d love to be involved with England.

“I’m not the best player in the world but I wouldn’t be going along for the ride like some players seem to do.

“You know, train a couple of days, wear the tracksuit but just shrug your shoulders when told you’re not playing.

“I wouldn’t be like Lampard or Gerrard, who are superstars at their clubs and want the limelight at England.

“If there were two balls on the pitch England would be successful but it’s been proven they don’t work together.

“If they want somebody to do the c**p jobs for them, then I’d like to think I was capable of doing that.

“Win the ball back, give it to either one of them and let them pull the strings — that’s fine by me.”

Midfielder Barton, who scored in City’s 2-1 loss to Spurs yesterday, added: “I look at top footballers these days and they’ve lost touch with reality.

“I’d say 90 per cent of them are from working class backgrounds but they play 100 games in the Premiership, get the car and the house and think they’re upper class.

“They surround themselves with hangers-on who tell them how wonderful they are every minute of the day and they lose any kind of perspective.”

Barton, who had to undergo an anger management course, said: “I’m not putting myself up as a role-model because I’ve done some stupid things and been out of control at times.

“But there’s always been a friend to tell me I’m bang out of order and say what I did was unacceptable.”

If he keeps talking like this, I'm really going to get to like the guy.

Hard  to believe it's only been eleven months since the big explosion with him.

On curent form he is in with a shout, just has to keep playing well and who knows.

I think there are a few people on here that if you had said a 11 months ago that he was on the fringe of England and that he was our best player, would have laughed and said sell him!!

Not so sure that they would say the same now.

I think they way he has played this season and making the right noises has put him up in most fans estimations. Lets hope he doesnt let us down again in Jan

More evidence that 11 months can make a huge difference to a player.  I really hope he is 100% genuine with these comments, and see absolutely no reason why he wouldn't be

Joey Barton has acted swiftly to quash media speculation linking him with a supposed move from Manchester City.

The Blues top scorer this season, exclusively told mcfc.co.uk that he wanted to make his position clear on the transfer tittle-tattle.

He said: "I am very happy here at City and have absolutely no desire or intention to leave. I want to concentrate on playing for this football club and am very positive about the future.

"I trust this is the end of the matter and we can get on with preparing for the Christmas period of games."
