Barton defends Corradi

JOEY Barton has leapt to the defence of team-mate Bernardo Corradi, who is facing a carpeting from boss Stuart Pearce over his derby day dive.

The Italian striker was criticised by Pearce after being sent off for a second bookable offence for diving in the closing stages of Saturday's game.

While the City manager had no complaints with referee Graham Poll's decision to show Corradi a red card, Barton believes there has been some inconsistency from officials when it comes to punishing divers this season.

And the 24-year-old midfielder hopes that the red card will not be seen as a stain on Corradi's character. Barton said: "Bernardo is an honest pro, and the one thing he isn't is a cheat but there's got to be that consistency.

Consistency

"There have been times this season when players have been rolling around on the floor, and you want to say to the referee: `Look, if he dives, book him. But do it to everyone. Don't do it to certain players and not others.'"

But Barton also gave Poll credit for the way he handled the City midfielder's scything challenge on Cristiano Ronaldo in the first few seconds of the match.

Poll let the England hopeful off with a verbal warning, after he crashed into the Portuguese winger, with Barton putting the tackle down to over-enthuiasm.

Barton said: "He actually told me: `You've let him know you're there and that's it, that's your last warning.'

"You're in the dressing room, and you're pumped up, with it being a derby game. You come out and you're like a bull - especially when you see those red shirts!"

Talking some sense yet again.

I especially like the last line.

Sometimes I wish that I could stop you from talking when I hear the silly things that you say

He certainly seems to have a more sensible head on his shoulders.

Or a cigar in the eye at the up-coming Christmas bash.
