ADD THE GAURDIAN TO THAT

Manchester City admit that Sylvain Distin may leave the club, with the French defender able to speak to prospective buyers in the January transfer window.

Stuart Pearce, the City manager, has made it clear to Distin that he wants him to stay but the club's chairman, John Wardle, admitted yesterday that he would have to listen to offers for a player who will be out of contract and available on a free transfer at the end of the season. "I don't want Sylvain Distin to leave but if something comes in that is businesslike we will have to sit down and discuss it in a businesslike manner."

Ah, there we go, so that's the relevant bit of the quote!  That comes as no surprise and makes sense, given that his contract is about to run out.  That is the case for any player in his situation and I doubt anyone would expect any other attitude to it from the board.

I imagine the question was put to Wardle at the AGM yesterday.

Dead right we should take this view, it is the only sensible approach however I cannot see anyone coming in and buying him for any decent amount unless a Champs league side who are decemated for CB cover come along and we can do a number on them.

I gave Elano my Porsche and now I want it back!

From what SP was saying recently about how he would like to stay and we have to make sure we get enough good results blah blah blah, it sounds like he's stalling on his contract to see what kind of position the club is in before making his decision.  Not really the kind of passionate die-for-the-shirt loyalty we would like to see from our players, but he has no real connection to City above any other club, so again it's not really surprising in the modern climate of the game.

It makes no sense to sell him in January. I'd have gladly sold him in the summer for £4million but now we'd get at best £1million in January, that's only 2 league places. His partnership with Dunne could easily be worth that over half a season. And with the tightness of the league this season, a few extra points could make a big difference to the final league placing.

I don't want to see him go, either, so it really all depends on what Wardle has in mind when he says 'something that is businesslike'.

totally agree.  if we can get £2M then let him go and bring someone in (as not replacing him leaves us lacking in cover). But if not then keep him until the summer and he will make us £1m by extra league places.  He's a solid defender and will be a steal for a club with deep pockets to pay inflated salaries (really gets on my wick - these guys have too much money as it is and they just want more and more - Greedy tw@ts..
