Eriksson on brink of City exit

Chris Bailey
29/ 4/2008

SVEN-Goran Eriksson is on the verge of leaving City at the end of the season after telling his players that meetings with club owner Thaksin Shinawatra did not go well.

Shinawatra has again failed to indicate whether the Swede will remain the club's manager after differences between the two men came to a head during two sessions of talks at the weekend.

MEN Sport understands it is likely Eriksson will be replaced unless there is a rethink by the billionaire owner.

However, City have released a statement saying: "Sven-Goran Eriksson has confirmed that he has no plans to leave the club. He will be at Carrington to take training as normal."

Both men were last night in London, though not together.

Shinawatra will head for Thailand after stopping over in the capital.

Eriksson, meanwhile, was representing City at the annual All Party football dinner at Whitehall.

He travelled south heartened by City fans' overwhelmingly positive response to the continuing speculation that he is fighting for his job. Hundreds of fans flooded this website with messages in support of Eriksson, while City players are also behind their boss.

What do you think? Have your say.

From the BBC site

Eriksson to be sacked by Man City

By Simon Austin

Sven-Goran Eriksson
Eriksson had a flying start to life with City

Sven-Goran Eriksson has been told he will be sacked as Manchester City manager at the end of the season, BBC Sport understands.

City owner Thaksin Shinawatra told Eriksson he was "not the right man for the job" at a meeting on Saturday, a source close to the Swede said.

Eriksson informed the players he would be dismissed at training on Monday, provoking an angry response from some.

Shinawatra has been unhappy with City's results since the turn of the year.

More to follow.

From SKY

Agent Athole Still believes Sven-Goran Eriksson's days at Manchester City are numbered following a fall-out with owner Thaksin Shinawatra.

The former England boss is unhappy Shinawatra has publicly criticised Eriksson following the team's disappointing second half of the Premier League campaign.

Tuesday's papers have suggested Eriksson will be sacked this term, however, Still has quashed talk the Swedish tactician will walk away from the remaining two years of his Eastlands contract.

Although Still has not had a lengthy chat with Eriksson following his meeting with club owner Shinawatra on Sunday, he does not think things are 'looking good' for the manager to stay on.

"I don't know, but the way that it's looking odd-against," he told Sky Sports News on Eriksson being City manager next season.

"Just because of the developments in the last couple of days. If Dr Shinawatra was going to give Sven a message of support I think we would have heard it.

"It's not looking good. Clearly there has not been the best of discussions between with himself and Dr Shinawatra.

"The only thing I can say with assurance is that Sven-Goran Eriksson will not be walking. I know they revere him in Manchester, from top to bottom.

"You walk if you feel that you have not done a good job and that you're not worthy of the position. In Sven's case that is very, very far from the true situation.

"I'm not spoken in depth with Sven since the meeting on Sunday."

Unhappy

Still has confirmed Eriksson was unhappy with Shinawatra after he was publicly criticised over their disappointing sequence of results.

"The story broke in the media about 10 days ago when Dr Shinawatra made some comments about being dissatisfied with the team and indirectly with Mr Eriksson," he continued.

"Sven was very unhappy with that, in the sense that if there is dissatisfaction it should be discussed internally first."

"Well he hasn't seen very much of him. That's a fact. Until last Saturday's game I don't think he was there in six weeks.

"Even before the time he was there in March. He's been back to Thailand. He's been all over. There hasn't been a great deal of discussion between them for many, many weeks.

Not a very funny one though.  It's on a par with one of Danny's jokes

If Frank gives Sven the boot this is proof that we have a trigger happy twat in charge of our club.

We are in danger of turning into Newcastle.  We'll may get within touching distance of achieving something and Frank will pull the rug because it isn't enough.

I thought it was a very bad sign that the ego-driven twat put his own picture on the cover of the final programme (along with Ricky Hatton) and that his message to the fans took precedence over the manager's meesage.  He also failed to acknowledge Sven once in his piece.

I hope Ricky twats the bastard next time he sees him.
