I agree Dabo looked anonymous for most of the game and Barton would work well with Hamann who can control the midfield from deep and let Joey break forward.

We just need a couple of goals against Blackburn for confidence levels and i'd love to see Corradi get one.

I am really annoyed about the Thatcher punishment to be honest. It just makes us look bad, we have done the right thing and punished him, the FA are just making it up as they go along and have added on their punishment.

We all know it was a 6 match ban which is what we gave him. They have simply added on another 2 games (which he has served) so they can give him the ban they wanted.

I have said this before, name another premiership club that would have punished their own player like we did; it was obviously the FA would take their own action. It just adds to my belief that we are seen as a soft touch, by other clubs, the fa, players, the press etc....

What ban did Ferdinand get for sniffing coke ? 8 months ? And Keane for ending Hallands career ? 4 matches was it ? And he bragged about it straight away and to this day (In his bio when he got the Sunderland job etc)

He crippled the poor guy and ended his career and said he did it on purpose ! I still maintain the Thatcher incident looked worse than it was. Yes it was out of order and Thatcher is a Noob and always has been on the pitch. Stuff like this happens every week in football, the whole thing was and continues to be blown out of all proportion. As for Dabo it was never a red card so we were right to challenge it. Its obvious they will not clear it though.

We need him for cover but I cant see him starting when Hamman is properly fit. It looks like a tidy player, but a bit of a luxury for a side like ours. Like Joe Royal said on the pre match build up, with Dabo in the centre with him, Barton is doing the work of 2 players so we are not getting anything like the best out of our best midfield player.

With Hamman in the side you could play Dabo and Barton on the right, Beasley on the left. That would be quite a tidy looking midfield I think.

I must be the only one who thinks Dabo looks a decent player. Sure he hasn't ripped up any trees, but that ain't his game. He sits in front of the back four and retains possesion. Watch him, very rarely does he give the ball away, nor does he get caught forward. This allows barton to do his headless chicken charging around.

It will take a little time for him to fully settle into our team, but I think he has made a decent start.

As for his sending off. Now that was pathetic. I don't want to get paranoid here, but does anyone think the refs are targeting us as the dirty side of the prem?

The worrying thing for Thatcher is, what if he gets sent off for a decision like Dabo's? That 15 game ban would look very likely!

Indeed, and my worry is that because he will be fully aware of that, he will be over-cautious in his play if he is called upon at any point in the next two years.  Taking out the thuggish side of his game is a good thing, but if he goes too far the other way we will be in big trouble.  The other obvious consequence of this is that it will now be virtually impossible to move him on - what club would take a gamble on a left back who not only has that streak running through him but also has a 15 game ban hanging over his head which will no doubt be implemented for the slightest thing?

I think we will find out on Sunday. Blackburn are a rough side and I am sure Hughes will be telling them to wind us up at every given opportunity

Stuart Pearce is convinced Ben Thatcher will not be affected by the 15-match suspended sentence hanging over him for the next two years.

Thatcher will serve the third game of an eight-match ban on Sunday when Manchester City visit Blackburn.

The punishment is a legacy of Thatcher's disgraceful challenge on Portsmouth's Pedro Mendes at Eastlands last month but came with the additional FA warning that if the former Welsh international transgresses in a similar manner again, he will automatically miss 15 games, effectively a third of a season.

For a player whose game is based on aggression, Thatcher will find himself walking a disciplinary tightrope when he is eventually cleared for his return to action in late October.

However, Pearce is not anticipating any problems from the 30-year-old full-back.

"I doubt it will affect him," said the former England skipper.

"Ben has a physical element to his game, which makes him the player he is and I don't think he can play in any other manner.

"He has been shaken up by the ferocity of his behaviour and I do detect remorse within him.

"What is important now is that he accepts his punishment, comes back perfectly fine and plays within the laws, which he does anyway 99.9% of the time."

Pearce admitted he is not entirely sure what would constitute a 'similar offence' or who would make the call.

It is not the only disciplinary 'grey area' he has found himself dealing with in recent days after Ousmane Dabo's three-match ban was upheld by the FA following his dismissal at Reading on Sunday.

Even Royals midfielder Steve Sidwell, whose face Dabo's elbow connected with when the pair challenged for an aerial ball at the Madejski Stadium, claimed the Frenchman's red card was harsh.

And, while Pearce has no grounds for taking the matter further, he feels there is an element of inconsistency about some of the punishments being dished out.

"Ousmane gets sent off and banned for three matches for something I deemed to be reasonably innocuous, yet Kevin Davies gets a broken cheekbone and Herman Hreidarsson only gets the same punishment."

There are many who feel that after getting major decisions wrong already this term, including Dermot Gallagher letting Thatcher off with only a booking for the Mendes assault, officials are now being over-zealous to ensure major incidents are properly dealt with.

"What you can do as a referee is look at the players' reaction," said Pearce.

"That will tell you whether there was a serious injury and whether you should stop the game or whether there has been a particularly bad tackle.

"Normally, the players' reaction is 99 per cent spot on. Sometimes you have to go with that."

At least Pearce has the experience of Dietmar Hamann to call on as City look to end a disastrous run of 11 defeats in 12 away games and also score their first goal of the new campaign in general play.

Joey Barton's match-winning penalty against Arsenal last month remains the Blues' only strike and with last season's top scorer Andy Cole now at Portsmouth and Darius Vassell sidelined with a knee injury, hopes of an immediate upturn in fortune are not high.

However, Pearce remains relaxed about the situation, insisting City will eventually come good.

"We do need to be more clinical in the final third than we were against Reading," he said.

"But the more often the team plays together, the more chances we will create and the more we will take."

sorry no sympathy for the guy

Dabo's red card was obviously the ref covering up for not sending Sincs off

I'll say it again we need pace up front and out wide  - but Pearce will either persevere with Reyna or put Sam out on the left  -

Part quote from SB's post....

Pearce admitted he is not entirely sure what would constitute a 'similar offence' or who would make the call.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After seeing Dabo's soft red card and appeal rejected what chance does Thatcher have of making it through two years without missing those 15 games, while remaining effective in any way...... none.

The most worrying part of this entire sage is that the FA are obviously making things up as they go along. They have clearly dealt with this transgression individually. They are not setting president because of the level of ambiguity in their punishment. If another player at another club, which had some influence, did something equally bad it would or, more likely IMO, would not be dealt in the same manner.Without going in to detail we could all name players who's actions on the pitch have been equally,or even more, disgraceful in the past and NO action has been taken even with evidence. One of the main suppositions of refereed sport is that the refs decision is final.Thatcher was hung on the evidence from TV the only player,to my knowledge, who has been dealt with in this manner after being disciplined, yes wrongly,by the official. These are the rules of the game they are the same for all.

If the manager is unsure what constitutes a similar offence then what chance does Thatcher have.Although I like many who have posted believe Thatchers so called challenge was disgraceful I equally feel that the FA have fudged the issue and that our manager must stop this, well I wont criticise the authority's attitude,or we will become the whipping boys for all footballs ills.

Come on SP get a grip,it's not enough to say you expect players to work hard and play within the rules. When decisions are wrongly made against us,and we have seen plenty,at least by criticising those decisions you forge a them against us attitude maybe we are lacking bit of that.
