This is from the FAI site:

Two members of the Republic of Ireland squad to play San Marino in the European Championship qualifying tie at Lansdowne Road on Wednesday were forced to withdraw from the squad today.

Stephen Carr (Newcastle United) received an ankle injury when playing for Newcastle against Manchester City on Saturday and was substituted.

His club medical officers reported to Ireland manager Stephen Staunton that he would not be recovered in time to figure in Wednesday’s match.

Newcastle drew in a scoreless game with Manchester City and an unused substitute in that game for Manchester was Stephen Ireland. He is suffering from a virus, however, and was unable to report to the Irish camp.

Manager Staunton declined to call up a substitute for either of the two players and said the rest of the squad would train on Monday at the base at Gannon Park, Malahide.

He said there were slight doubts about the fitness of two other players – midfielder Jonathan Douglas who helped Leeds United beat Colchester United 3-0 on Saturday and Lee Carsley who was on the Everton team that lost 0-1 to Aston Villa.

Staunton said, however, that both players were expected to be fully recovered from their injuries in time to train with the squad before Wednesday’s match.

Goalkeeper Shay Given (Newcastle United) joined the squad on Sunday after his recovery from the injury that kept him out of Ireland’s last two matches against Cyprus and the Czech Republic.

Given has yet to play for Newcastle since his injury.

Also with the Irish squad in Dublin was Sir Bobby Robson, the FAI’s international consultant, now fully recovered from his recent surgery.
