Alex McLeish has revealed that he will not be continuing with his efforts to sign Georgios Samaras from Manchester City.

With James McFadden and Mauro Zarate arriving at St Andrews during the transfer window the Birmingham boss now feels that he has sufficient attacking options.

Samara has made just five Premier League appearances for Manchester City this season and McLeish had been tracking the player for some time.

The two clubs had agreed a £2.5million fee for the Greek international, but in light of recent transfer activity the Blues boss has now admitted that the deal is unlikely to be revived.

Out of time

"I cannot do that deal just now," McLeish told the Birmingham Mail.

"We have a lot of strikers at the club and I have to concentrate on another couple of positions.

"Time has just run on with the Samaras one.

"I had identified the big guy as a target five or six weeks ago and if I could have done it then, it would have been different.

"But things have dragged on and other people became available. McFadden became available, Zarate was an unexpected opportunity, therefore it created a problem with the Samaras one. So it's unlikely."

I would think things have dragged on from our perspective because we've got a few nicks and bangs reducing our number of fit strikers and there has been nothing firm up by way of a purchase. Which makes sense.

It does suggest that the speculation that Sven hasn't funds is just that, specutlation. Otherwise we ought to have snapped up 2.5 million for a player who is surplus to our needs. As I understand it, that also would have given us back what we are out of pocket on Samaras.

I don't think this deal will change anything. We can say that it will give us a profit of £2.5mil. Anyway I don't think Samaras is a big factor for us or he will change anything in the starting 11.

I thought Samaras was a good player when we first signed him. However, he doesn't get many games now and wether or not he stays won't really affect the team IMO. It's a bit of a shame, as I thought he could do well for us.

I think everyone liked him and wished he'd do well, but it just hasn't come together for the lad.

Perhaps he'll get another chance to show us on  the weekend.

Faily Mirror so, well, you know...

Manchester City misfit Georgios Samaras is a shock target for Scottish giants Rangers.

The Greece international striker could be thrown a lifeline by Walter Smith as the Ibrox chief looks for a a replacement for Daniel Cousin, who could be heading to Fulham. Samaras (above), for sale at £2.5million, could be keen to move to the SPL after two years in Manchester.

Keeper of the heretic's fork of doom.

Looks like we can't give him away.  I can see him in the starting line up before the season's out, which doesn't bode well.

Just thinking, Samaras is a pretty damn poor excuse for a striker, who doesn't put himself around enough.  And yet, if you changed one letter of his surname you would get a sportsman who was actually very, very good at what he did.

We've still got a hell of a lot of dross in the squad though eh?

I see Dandy Mills is crocked again too.

It takes time to build a squad, can't do it overnight, and half of the dead wood at City are all probably on big contracts earning massive wages - who can pay them what we do, and who would want them?  It's probably up to the players to take a wage cut, sign for a lesser club, to be able to play first team football.  To be fair to Mills, at least he's gone out to places like Hull and Derby to be able to play.  Surely it must have been far easier for him just to sit on his backside in the reserves.
