ROCKER Noel Gallagher nearly left himself broke by drunkenly offering to pay a football star £7.8mil-lion a year to play for Manchester City.

The Oasis guitarist jokingly asked AC Milan star Paolo Maldini if he would play for his beloved team at a party.

But he had to backtrack next morning when he was told Maldini had taken him seriously.

el, 39, said: "I said to him in a drunken ramble if he promised to play for City I would personally give him £150,000 a week.

"My manager rang me to tell me he thought I meant it. I had to phone him to say I didn't."

If Maldini, 38, had taken up the offer, Noel would have lost his £25million fortune in three years.

It is not the first time Noel has tried to tempt an Italian superstar. Earlier this year he told his friend Alessandro Del Piero he would love him at City.

But World Cup winner Del Piero, 31, said: "I couldn't leave Juventus - I owe them too much."

Just goes to show, £25million is pocket money!

Indeed, it really brings it home just how much money would need to be invested into a modern football club to turn it around.  OK so £150,000 a week for a player is excessive, but that could be viewed as 3 players on £50k a week and the money would run out just as quickly!  It shows just how scary the amounts of money Abramovich is ploughing into Chelsea really are, but also how much trouble they would be in should be up and leave (voluntarily or otherwise).

I would piss myself if that happened. I'm sure he'll get bored one day and pull the plug.

you know, you know, if a feller named Monroe never fathered bluegrass
he would still be unrecognised as the grand wizard of speed metal

Do you think if we wish it enough it will happen. I can't stand that club. They've never been anything but a fancy dan club in London like West Ham. Just wait till West Ham receive this major investment (god I hope they don't). The southern media will be creaming themselves over the mighty Hammers!
