| Puts his improved performance (by all accounts) against Boro down to recovery from a niggling back injury. I'm in two minds about this. On the one hand, I hope this is the level of performance we can always expect from him when fit, and it may explain earlier sub-par performances. On the other hand, playing when not really fit and performing less than 100% earlier in the season can hardly have helped the team, no matter how desperate to do well. I don't want a sicknote, and am pleased he is desperate to play for us, but sometimes it may be better to be honest with yourself and the manager in these situations.Paul Dickov showed that he has shaken off a niggling back injury to inspire City's win over Middlesbrough on Monday. The striker earned a standing ovation when substituted near the end of the match having shown no signs of the back problem that he admits affected his performances earlier in the season. “My back is still a bit stiff and sore but the original problems I had with the disc have cleared,” says the striker, who celebrates his 34th birthday today. “I was suffering with pains shooting down my leg and it was hampering me but they have gone now and I feel fit and fine. I perhaps didn’t do myself justice earlier in the season by wanting to play so much when things weren’t quite right. “But I am not going to make any excuses, those were my decisions. Now I just want to make sure I start more matches. I have had to wait a while but whenever you do get your chance in the side you have to take it and I think that I did that against Middlesbrough.” Turning to the win over Middlesbrough, Paul emphasises how much the team needed to put the defeat at Wigan behind them. "It was a big result for us after the disappointment of last week. We were all a bit embarrassed, it was so important to bounce back and we showed our pride. Everybody wants to play for the shirt. "We should go out and set a tempo in the first 10 or 15 minutes. We're hard to play against, but it's no good winning one, drawing one and losing one, we've got to get a run together now."

| I thought Dicov was very good against 'Boro. He annoyed the keeper at corners, chased everything down and was an inspiration to those around him. He isn't going to score many himself but he'll help others put them away.

| He's got a blue and white heart and gives 100% for every minute he's on the pitch. I also think he lifts the fans a bit. I'd start him against Charlton and see if his nuisance value plus continual chasing of the ball starts to pay off. He the sort of player that defences hate and get frustrated with. I wish players like Samaras had the passion and determination of Dickov. Sam's getting better and could learn a lot from Paul.

| Dickov is a blue, no doubts about that, he'll always give 110%, no doubts about that, he'll always cause the opposition defence a few problems, no doubts about that, but will he give us the 10+ goals a season we need? major doubts about that.

You don't have to run around like a mentalist for 90 minutes to show you have passion. That's not a criticism of Dickov, but just because not everybody does that doesn't mean they aren't as passionate. For example, the goat wasn't really like that...you could never question his passion for city
